THE SPORTS REPORTS: CORNING'S McKANE TOPS ALL-REGION GIRLS SWIM TEAM AS 'SWIMMER OF YEAR;' WELLSBORO DUO HONORED (2022-03-30)
The Sports ReportsCorning sophomore
Angie McKane was a
state champion, and two-time state medalist breaking records throughout
the season. She headlines The Sports Reports’ 2021-22 girls’ All-Region
team as ‘
Swimmer of the Year.”
What didn’t Corning’s
Angie McKane do this year? She became the first swimming state champion
for the Hawks when she won the 100 fly NYSPHSAA title and she also
added a fifth-place finish in the 50 free. She broke school records in
both events and also broke the Section 4 record in the fly. Her list of
records she holds is already a mile long and she’s just a sophomore.
She qualified for states in four events, helping Corning make it to
States in both the 200 and 400 free relays. She helped the 200 free
relay finish 11th at states.
Corning’s
Brooke Terwilliger was a state medalist for the Hawks and she is the “
Diver of the Year.” Terwilliger was second at the Section 4, Class A Diving championships at 432.80, before having a big meet at states.
Terwilliger
was 10th in the state to earn a state medal. She was Section 4, Class
AA’s most consistent diver throughout the season.
The
Hawks 200 free relay finished 11th at the state meet and they were the “
Relay of the Year.”
The
team of McKane, Kara Peters, Vanessa Turner and Audra Hilker swam a
1:42.06 to win the sectional championship and then lowered their time
at states with a 1:40.97.
Elmira’s
Madelyn Cavalier had a strong debut season and she was the “
Newcomer of the Year.”
The
eighth-grader finished ninth in the 100 fly and 10th in the 100
backstroke at sectionals. Her best times this year were 1:15.08 in the
fly and 1:13.88 in the 100 backstroke. Against Ithaca in October she won
the 100 fly and took second in the 100 back.
Horseheads won the Section 4 team title and coach
Megan Janeski is the “
Coach of the Year.”
The
Blue Raiders went unbeaten in the regular season, claiming the STAC
division title. They then went to sectionals and won the Class A
championship with a team score of 515.5 topping Corning (467). The Blue
Raiders didn’t have any swimming state qualifiers, and they relied on
their depth to help them win all season long.
