WILMINGTON, NC — Wellsboro grad and three-time PIAA All-State volleyball player Caitlyn Callahan recently announced that, after a stellar season with the Millersville University volleyball team that resulted in numerous conference accolades for the redshirt freshman, she would be transferring to D1 University of North Carolina Wilmington to continue her volleyball career.

For Callahan, the transfer to UNC Wilmington fulfills a longtime goal.

“Playing Division 1 volleyball was a huge goal of mine coming out of high school", Callahan says. “I had some D1 opportunities throughout my junior and senior years, but I decided that Millersville was a great starting point, since I loved the coaches, the campus and the competitiveness of the PSAC.”

After losing her freshman season at Millersville due to Covid implications, Callahan took full advantage of her redshirt-freshman season with the Marauders.

While Millersville did not enjoy large successes on the season .. finishing 11-20 overall and 5-9 in the PSAC East .. Callahan had a breakout performance and was lauded with numerous in-season and post-season recognitions, including:

All-PSAC Eastern Division First-Team
PSAC East Rookie of the Year
D2CCA All-Atlantic Region Second-Team
PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week (10/25/21)
Led PSAC in solo blocks with 52
Second in conference in total blocks (129) and points (428.5)
Played team-high 117 sets
Second on team with 314 kills
Third on team in aces (24)

Callahan’s performance opened up numerous opportunities.

“I was not planning on transferring to another university”, Callahan says, “but after my first year and with all my accolades, I decided that I wanted more. I had been in contact with a lot of schools, but UNC Wilmington had a lot to offer. They have a beautiful campus with so much to do .. their academics are fantastic and their athletics and resources provided to athletes are absolutely incredible.”

The Seahawks play in the Colonial Athletic Association, along with teams from the University of Charleston, Delaware, Hofstra, Elon, Towson, Northeastern and William & Mary. Their non-conference opponents in recent seasons have included Clemson, Duke, Wake Forest, Davidson, NC State and other national powers.

Callahan will have three seasons of eligibility left to play for the ‘Hawks, and while her excitement is evident as she takes on this new challenge, Callahan is quick to thank her former team for making this all possible.

“I am very grateful for Millersville and the opportunities my coaches gave me”, Callahan says, “because this way I was able to see that I have a huge competitive drive and I will be able to show that in the CAA and against multiple top teams in Division 1!”

“I’m also so proud to be representing the NTL down in North Carolina”, Callahan says, in closing, “and am excited to do some big things!”
