ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: SPRING, WEEK 5 (2022-04-24)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — There were dozens of notable performances turned in by our local athletes this week, and we sifted through all that were reported on to find our Week 5 Athletes of the Week.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD
Owen Cummings, Williamson
Cummings warmed up early in the week by helping Williamson win their tri-meet with NPM and Towanda, taking first in the 1600 (4:57) and on the 4x100 meter relay team (3:57), second in the 800 (2:20) and third in the 3200 (11:55), before heading to the highly competitive Jack Roddick Invitational in Shippensburg and proceeding to break Williamson’s program record in the 3200 meter run with a 9:48.59. The sophomore also ran the 1600, in 4:36.65, and the 800, in 2:09.23.

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD
Madeline Gage, Wellsboro
Gage won an individual championship in the 2000 meter steeplechase for Wellsboro at the Molly Dry Invite, completing the rugged race in 9:08.46.

SOFTBALL
Addie Smith, North Penn-Liberty
In the Lady Mounties’ 4-1 win over CV, Smith had a double, an RBI and scored a run, then followed that up with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored in a 9-4 loss to Canton. The freshman also worked the final three innings against Canton, allowing two runs on just two hits and a walk.

TENNIS
Joe Doty, Wellsboro
Doty helped the Hornets to a pair of sweeps this week from his No. 1 singles spot, winning 6-0, 6-0 in Wellsboro’s 5-0 win over CV, and getting a hard-fought victory .. 7-6(7-5), 7-5 .. in a sweep of Loyalsock.

BASEBALL
Erik Berkan, Williamson
Berkan helped the Warriors to a 2-2 week, tossing a five-inning no-hitter in the nightcap of Williamson’s doubleheader against Galeton. He had nine strikeouts in the 12-1 win and added a single at the plate. In the first game, Berkan had a hit and an RBI as Williamson won 15-4, and earlier in the week, he had a hit, an RBI and scored a run in an 8-2 loss to Athens, and had a pair of hits, including a double, and threw four and two-thirds innings with seven K’s in an 11-1 loss to Troy.
