ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: SPRING, WEEK 6 (2022-05-01)

TIOGA COUNTY — The Northern Tier West Sports Report is proud to announce our Athletes of the Week in softball, baseball, boys’ and girls’ track and field and boys’ tennis for the week of April 25th to April 30th.

SOFTBALL
Megan Hyde, Cowanesque Valley
The Lady Indians had a 3-1 week, and Hyde had a strong performance in each game. In a 14-0 win over Wellsboro, Hyde pitched a five-hit shutout with six strikeouts, and had a hit and a run scored at the plate. CV lost 4-3 to undefeated NEB, where Hyde scored a run and pitched the final inning, shutting down the Panthers to give CV a chance to complete their comeback. In a 16-0, three inning win over Coudersport, Hyde threw a complete game shutout giving up just three hits with six K’s. CV rallied to beat Canton, where Hyde had a hit and scored two runs, and pitched three and two-thirds innings allowing no runs on one hit with three strikeouts.

BASEBALL
Conner Adams, Wellsboro
Wellsboro scored 56 runs in three lopsided wins this week, with several players putting up video game-like numbers .. none more so than Adams. In a 13-5 win over CV, Adams had a pair of hits, an RBI and scored a run, then followed that up with three base hits, two RBI and three runs scored in a 20-6 win over Troy. Against NP-Mansfield, Adams had four hits, with a double, and added three RBI and scored four times in the Hornets’ 23-3 win.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD
Owen Cummings, Kristian Mizdail and Nathaniel Welch, Williamson
The distance trio had a strong showing at the Lasagna Invite, accounting for 48 of Williamson’s 73 total team points. Cummings won the title in the 1600, followed by Mizdail in 2nd place and Welch in 7th. Welch was 2nd in the 800, followed by Cummings in 3rd and Mizdail in 4th, and Mizdail placed 3rd in the 3200, while Cummings was 7th.

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD
Chelsea Hungerford, Williamson
In a tri-meet early in the week, Hungerford won both the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdle events, then was the highest place winner of any West girl at the Lasagna Invite, taking 6th in the 100 hurdles.

BOYS’ TENNIS
Drew Manning, Wellsboro
The Hornets went 3-1 on the week, and Manning finished 3-0 in his matches. He combined with Jacob Abadi to win their doubles match in the Hornets’ win against Muncy, and the pair won again in a loss to Galeton. He also paired with Connor Pierce to win their doubles match against Towanda.
