MANSFIELD — Over 230 area athletes descended on the campus of Mansfield University Friday, joined by an even higher number of event organizers, volunteers and buddies, as the Tioga County Special Olympics held their annual games at MU’s Karl Van Norman Field.

The participants and their buddies opened the event with a ‘Parade of Athletes’, displaying their team flags as they walked the track to cheers from the hundreds of family and friends in attendance.

The Special Olympics Banner was proudly presented by Taylor Makley from Wellsboro High School and Skyler Barnes from North Penn-Mansfield High School, followed by the presentation of the Special Olympics Torch by Barbie Walker from Partners In Progress.

After a wonderful performance of the National Anthem by the North Penn-Mansfield High School chorus, opening comments from both Addie Milheim .. Special Olympics Athletic Event Coordinator .. and Ron Frick .. President of United Way Partnership .. and a spirited recital of the Special Olympics Oath by Wellsboro High School’s Shawn Starks, the games began!

Athletes took part in a number of events, including the 50 and 100 meter walk, 50 and 100 meter run, the 200 meter run, the softball throw, standing and running long jump, tennis ball toss and 25 meter wheelchair.
