ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: SPRING, WEEK 9 (2022-05-22)

TIOGA COUNTY — The Northern Tier West Sports Report is proud to announce our Athletes of the Week in boys’ and girls’ track, boys’ tennis, softball and baseball. 

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD
Kristian Mizdail, Williamson
Mizdail is a member of the Warriors’ 4x800 meter relay team that placed 2nd at Districts and qualified for the State meet this weekend. The sophomore then placed 2nd in the 3200 meter run in 9:36.38, setting a new school record and qualifying for the State meet. Not done for the day, Mizdail then finished third in the 1600 meter run and met the State qualifying time with his 4:28.99. All told, Mizdail medaled in three events, qualified for States in three events and just missed medaling in his fourth event, the 800, by placing 9th.

GIRLS’ Track & Field
Annie Gehman, Wellsboro
While the West came up short of having any girl athletes medal at the District IV Championships, Gehman had a solid performance. The freshman finished 11th in both the high jump (4-10) and the triple jump (32-00) and 17th in the long jump (14-04.25).

BOYS’ TENNIS
Liam Manning & Joseph Doty, Wellsboro
Wellsboro duo Liam Manning and Joseph Doty won two matches at the District IV Doubles Championship, beating the team from Selinsgrove, 6-4, 6-4, then the team from Jersey Shore 5-7, 6-4, 6-0. The pair reached the quarterfinals before being knocked out of the Championship.

SOFTBALL
Mikenna Buchanan, Williamson
Buchanan had two of the Lady Warriors’ four hits and recorded six strikeouts in a loss to 17-2 Bucktail. In Williamson’s 14-1, season ending win over Galeton, the sophomore had four hits and seven more K’s, giving her 112 on the season.

BASEBALL
Mikey Sipps, Cowanesque Valley
Sipps hit .636 for the Indians in three wins on the week. The senior had two home runs and three hits total in a win over Galeton, adding six RBI and scoring four runs. In an 11-1 win over Towanda, Sipps had a hit and a run scored and in the Indians’ regular season finale, a 13-8 win over NP-Mansfield, he had three hits, an RBI and scored three runs.
