NTL SOFTBALL: YOUNG LADY HORNETS WILL LOOK TO BUILD OFF ROLLERCOASTER '22 SEASON (2022-06-07)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
WELLSBORO — A young Wellsboro softball team endured an up-and-down season in 2022, finishing with a 7-13 record overall and a 3-7 mark in the NTL Large School Division.

The Lady Hornets started the season winning just one of their first five games, and two of their first nine, as they struggled to find their bats and averaged under four runs per game in those losses. They’d finish 5-7 the rest of the way, and scoring runs proved to be no issue as the Hornets averaged over 16 runs per game in their wins and nearly nine runs per game overall on the season.

Even with a pair of 20+ run outbursts during the season (21-8 win over Coudersport, 21-17 win over Troy), Wellsboro’s best games may have come in losses. The Hornets pushed Large School-champ Wyalusing late in the season, as the Rams needed a walk-off to top the Hornets 10-9, and Wellsboro played a very good 16-5 Canton squad tough twice, falling 7-4 in the season opener and scoring 11 runs on the Lady Warriors in their second meeting, a 16-11 loss.

Emma Coolidge, one of only three seniors on the roster, led the team with both a .579 on-base-percentage and a .510 batting average. She recorded 25 hits, with five home runs, and had 18 RBI while scoring 21 runs.

The remaining offensive leaders were all underclassmen, including junior Maddi Bordas, who led the Hornets with 33 hits and 27 runs scored on the season and had 10 doubles, three home runs, a triple and 25 RBI. Her .508 batting average and .548 on-base-percentage were both second on the team behind Coolidge.

A pair of freshmen excelled in their first varsity campaign, as Lexi Urena led the Hornets in RBI with 28, in home runs, with seven, and was second in runs scored with 26, while Paige Logsdon had a team-high 12 doubles among her 26 base hits, second most on the team.

Jordyn Abernathy was a solid leadoff hitter for Wellsboro all season, getting on base at a .436 clip and batting .343 with 23 hits, including five doubles, two triples and a home run. The junior led the Hornets with 11 walks and had 25 runs scored, 13 RBI and seven stolen bases, while solidifying the Hornets’ middle infield from her shortstop position.

Rylie Boyce logged a majority of innings pitched for Wellsboro this season, throwing 111 innings and finishing with a 7-8 record, a 4.74 ERA and 64 strikeouts. At the plate, the junior collected 24 hits, 22 runs scored and hit .387 with a .479 OBP.

Senior Abbye Cavanaugh (.283, .348, 17 H, 14 R, 4-2B, 1-3B, 1-HR, 10 RBI), junior Molly Ingerick (.265, .345, 13 H, 15 R, 8 RBI) and senior Olivia Servatius (.229 OBP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 RBI) rounded out the Lady Hornets’ offensive attack.

All told, next year the Lady Hornets will return nearly 80% of their offensive production .. and all of their pitching .. as they look to build on this past season.
