NTL BASEBALL: NORTH PENN-MANSFIELD STAYED COMPETITIVE IN '22 DESPITE MID-SEASON SLUMP (2022-06-09)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
MANSFIELD — The North Penn-Mansfield baseball team, while led by a nice mix of experienced players and several newcomers, suffered through an eight-game losing streak in the middle of their season which left them with a 7-13 record overall.

After a 5-2 start, which included losses to eventual league-champ Wyalusing and runner-up Wellsboro, the Tigers began their skid .. dropping eight games in 16 days. They’d rebound by winning two straight .. over Towanda and Troy .. and still had a shot at qualifying for District playmate in the season, as they were 7-10 with four scheduled games remaining.

Unfortunately, a cancelled game with a beatable St. John Neumann team was refused to be made up, meaning NPM would have to win out .. against an Athens squad who had beaten the Tigers by just a run earlier in the season, against eventual Class AA champ South Williamsport and against CV, who had topped the Tigers by two runs in their first meeting.

NPM would go 0-3 in their remaining games, however, as once the Tigers were eliminated from a post-season berth, Head Coach Rob Davis used the opportunity to play deep into his roster.

Freshman Alex Davis had a stellar varsity debut, leading the Tigers in batting average (.438), on-base-percentage (.509), hits (21), doubles (10), RBI (24), stolen bases (11) and tying for the team lead with one home run.

Karson Dominick was second on the team in BA (.396), OBP (.455), hits ..(with 19, along with Cameron Fabian and Derek Litzelman) and led NPM with 18 runs scored. The sophomore logged 28 1/3 innings on the mound, going 3-2 with a 5.44 ERA and 15 strikeouts.

Senior Fabian batted .380 and had a .426 OBP, with 19 hits, 15 runs scored and was once again one of the league’s top catchers. He also went 1-2 on the mound for the Tigers, throwing 12 innings with a 1.17 ERA and six strikeouts.

Junior Litzelman (.388 BA, .446 OBP, 19 H, 14 R, 8 RBI), seniors Hunter Thompson (.348, .392, 16 H, 10 R) and Eli Shaw (.222, .333, 8 H, 7 R, 9 RBI) and freshmen Cooper Shaw (.325, .404, 13 H, 13 RBI) and Easton Pequignot (.276, .344, 8 H, 7 R, 4 RBI) rounded out the Tigers battery.

Cooper Shaw went 2-1 on the mound, throwing 20 1/3 innings with a 4.82 ERA and 17 K’s, while Davis threw 13 innings to go 1-1 with a 3.23 ERA and eight strikeouts.

Along with Fabian, Thompson and Eli Shaw, the Tigers will lose Kyle Davis .. a senior who had figured to play a big role in NPM's rotation, but was sidelined early due to arm issues .. as well as Wyatt Wesneski, Troy Dickinson and Ben Cook.
