LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL: WELLSBORO MAJORS FORCE WINNER-TAKE-ALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WITH WIN OVER ATHENS (2022-07-12)

ATHENS — Wellsboro scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull out a 5-1 win over Athens here Tuesday evening in the championship round of the District 15 Little League Major Division baseball playoffs.

Athens took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run before Wellsboro tied the game in the fourth when Gabe Cuneo walked to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

In the fifth inning, Wyatt Starkweather led off with a walk and after a groundout, Landon Stevens walked as well. Stephen Poirier doubled to score Starkweather, and Maddon Mascho doubled to score Stevens and Poirier.

Mascho would later score on a passed ball to provide the 5-1 final.

Cuneo pitched two and two-thirds innings and allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts, while Jake Starkweather threw two and two-thirds hitless innings with three strikeouts and Gage Baltzley went two-thirds of an inning and struck out one.

Wellsboro, which advanced to the championship round with an 8-4 win over Towanda in the consolation bracket finals, will host Athens Thursday at 6 p.m. in the final game of the double-elimination bracket play.
