NTL BOYS SOCCER: HORNETS TOP TROJANS FOR THIRD WIN (2021-09-18)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
WELLSBORO — Jack Poirier and Owen Richardson scored two goals apiece Saturday, lifting the Hornets to a 5-1 win over league-foe Troy in NTL boys soccer action.

It would be Troy who opened the scoring for the day, as Wyatt Hodlofski scored Troy’s lone goal midway through the first half.

Richardson put Wellsboro on the board just three minutes later, connecting on a goal off a pass from Poirier at the 22:10 mark of the first half to tie the score at one apiece, before Poirier scored on an assist from Sam Rudy just four and a half minutes later, giving the Hornets a 2-1 lead that they’d carry into the locker rooms.

After the break, Richardson found the net on a penalty kick just nine minutes into the half. Poirier and Ethan Barlett then each scored off Caden Smith assists .. at the 12:22 and 15:26 marks .. securing a 5-1 win for  Wellsboro.

The Hornets had 14 shots-on-goal, compared to six for the Trojans, which has been a point of emphasis for Head Coach Todd Fitch to his squad this season.

“This was our second consecutive match that we were able to create double digit shots on goal”, Fitch stated. “We also did a good job of limiting their opportunities. We need to continue to develop our ability to finish our shots after creating the opportunities.”

Each of the keepers in the game .. Aiden Gehman for Wellsboro and Eli Randall for Troy .. had three saves in goal, and Wellsboro held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Hornets stay undefeated in the NTL with the win, at 3-0-1, and will travel to take on Athens on Tuesday.
