NTL BOYS SOCCER: HORNETS' RALLY UPSETS ATHENS (2021-09-21)

ATHENS — Wellsboro jumped out to a 1-0 lead, fell behind 2-1 at the break, then rallied with four goals in the second half to pull off the 5-3 upset win over the host Wildcats in NTL boys’ soccer action Tuesday.

Sam Rudy gave the Hornets the early lead with a goal off a Jackson Brill assist just seven minutes into the game .. a lead Wellsboro would hold for the next 25 minutes.

Athens scored with six and a half minutes left in the half to tie the score, then found the net again three minutes later to take a 2-1 lead into the locker rooms.

Wellsboro’s Jacoo Abadi tied the game at two just over four minutes into the second half with a goal off a Jack Poirier assist, before the Wildcats took the lead back with a goal near the 18:30 mark.

The Hornets answered with a hat-trick of goals within five minutes to take back the lead and secure the win.

Matthew Richards scored off a Poirier assist with 19 minutes left in the game, then Rudy gave the Hornets the lead at 4-3 with a goal less than a minute later .. also assisted by Poirier. 

Rudy would return the favor four minutes later when he assisted on a Poirier goal, securing the Wellsboro upset win.

Wellsboro Head Coach Todd Fitch sees that his squad is improving weekly, saying, “We created opportunities and finished our shots tonight, a combination we have been missing. The boys continue to play with great resolve.”

The Hornets had a 16-15 edge in shots-on-goal, while Athens had the advantage in corner kicks, 4-3.

Keeper Aiden Gehman had 13 saves for the Hornets.

Wellsboro will return to action Thursday when they travel to North Penn-Liberty.
