NTL GIRLS SOCCER: WELLSBORO EDGES TOWANDA FOR LEAGUE WIN (2021-09-23)
Northern Tier West Sports ReportWELLSBORO — The Lady Hornets jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first half, then held off Towanda in the second forty to pick up a 2-1 win Thursday in NTL girls’ soccer action.
Maddy Mascho got Wellsboro on the board just two minutes into the game, scoring off an assist from Jordyn Abernathy for the 1-0 early lead.
With just under six minutes left in the first half, Abernathy again assisted on a goal, this time by Sarah Selling.
After the break, Towanda cut the lead in half at the 33:14 mark, but the Wellsboro defense tightened up and limited the Knights scoring opportunities and held on for the 2-1 win.
The Hornets edged Towanda in shots-on-goal, 9-8, and in corner kicks, 4-2.
Keeper Lilly Abadi had 7 saves in goal for Wellsboro.
Wellsboro improves to 2-4 overall, and 2-2 in the NTL, with the win. They are scheduled to return to action Saturday when they travel to Wyalusing for a 10:00 a.m. start.
