SHIPPENSBURG — The Wellsboro girls track team had a strong first day led by Lauren Kosek taking home a fifth place medal in the 1600 during the PIAA Track and Field Championships Friday.

"I'm super excited," Kosek said about the race. "It's a super fast race, and coming in I was ranked and seeded second. I had some pretty big goals for places, but at the end of the day a PR is a PR, and it was just a really good race."

Kosek ran a personal best of 4:58.65 to get on the podium, while Piper Hoprich reached the finals in the 100 and 200 along with the 4x100 squad also punching their ticket to Saturday.

It was quite a race for Kosek, who started the race on the rail. She was boxed in early and came across the first lap in 17th.

The junior made up the ground on the second lap, coming all the way back to second, right behind leader Baylee Espinosa of Lewisburg.

"I think I ran my smartest race," said Kosek. "I was able to relax on the first lap, even when I got boxed in."

Kosek stayed in second until about 200 to go when the chase pack caught up with her, and she fell back to fifth.

"Running the race and all you've really got to focus on catching the next person," remarked Kosek. "It would take something crazy to actually be able to make up that gap, I was just trying to get closer - focus on the back of her head and just go."

Espinosa ended up winning with a time of 4:53.81.

"We all know Baylee is very strong, and has run some very, very strong times," said Kosek.

The two are the top two seeds in the 3200 Saturday morning.

"I'm so excited," said Kosek. "Coming into this weekend I felt I had a lot of confidence, and a lot of belief in myself in what I could run. I've run strong races all season, but I felt I had a little bit more potential to leave it out on the track this weekend, and that includes tomorrow."

Hoprich was third in the 100 preliminaries with a time of 12.08 while she had the fastest time in qualifying in the 200 at 24.40.

She won her heat in both.

The 4x100 relay team of Hoprich, Luna Moyer, Sophia Yoder, and Paige Rush ran a school record of 49.48 to take fifth to make the finals on Saturday.

They'll be joined by Hughesville and Mifflinburg.

On the boys' side David Seeling took 24th at 5-feet, 10-inches in the high jump. He made his first try at 5-feet, 10-inches, but couldn't get over 6-feet.

Henry Whitney (4:33.80) was 26th overall in the 1600, taking ninth in the second heat.
