THE SPORTS REPORTS: CORNING'S GREGORSKI NAMED ALL-REGION MALE 'ATHLETE OF THE FALL;' TWO WEST ATHLETES MAKE LIST (2021-12-19)

Senior Jack Gregorski became the first Corning boy since the merger of the two schools to win a cross country state championship, and is The Sports Reports’ 2021 All-Region Male “Athlete of the Fall.”

Gregorski not only led the Hawks to a team state title, but also led them to STAC and Section IV titles, with the team sweeping the top five spots at both of those meets.

He recently finished seventh at the Eastbay Regionals to become the first Corning boy to earn a spot at Eastbay Nationals.

The Hawks senior was the All-Region Cross Country “Runner of the Year.”

The Baker’s Dozen list is comprised solely of seniors (nine) and juniors (four).

Emmett Wood, senior, Tioga football: Fast and physical, Wood rushed for 2,144 yards and 34 TDs, averaging 12.1 yards per carry. He finished his career fifth all-time in New York State history with 7,367 yards, and he scored 99 rushing TDs. … Defensively, Wood had 42 tackles, including 11 solo stops, four tackles-for-losses, and three QB sacks. He also had two interceptions, both of which he returned for touchdowns, including an 85-yarder.

Wood was the All-Region Football “Player of the Year,” and “Offensive Player of the Year.”

Yuri Brich, senior, Owego soccer: Brich's highly-skilled footwork and his quickness gave opposing defenders fits all season long.

Brich would score on an overtime penalty kick to upset top-seeded Chenango Valley, 1-0, in the Section IV Class B championship game, then gave the Indians a 1-0 halftime lead over Skaneateles in the regionals. The Lakers would rally to win, 2-1, in overtime, but not before Owego proved it was a legitimate state powerhouse.

Brich led the team with 23 goals while also dishing out 15 assists.

He was the All-Region Boys Soccer “Player of the Year.”

Riley Loomis, senior, Horseheads football: Loomis had a dominant year for the Blue Raiders. He ran for 1,169 yards and 12 touchdowns on 181 carries this year and seemed to have his biggest games, in the biggest moments, helping the Blue Raiders top sectional champions Corning and Union-Endicott during the regular season.

Loomis was an all-around player, recording 59 tackles, two tackles-for-loss and an interception on defense this year as well. He was also the team’s punter and averaged of 36.1 yards on 13 punts.

Loomis was the All-Southern Tier Football “Player of the Year.”

Riley Parker, junior, Canton football: Parker was the driving force — on both sides of the ball — for a Canton football team that reached the PIAA, Class A semifinals for the first time in school history.

Parker rushed for 1,333 and 22 TDs, including 409 yards and eight TDs in four postseason games. … Defensively, Parker had 40 tackles this season, including nine in the postseason — three of them tackles-for-loss, and one QB sack.

Parker was the Bradford County Football “Player of the Year.”

Ashton Bange, junior, Corning cross country: Ashton Bange had a dominant season in his first year on the soccer pitch after playing soccer in previous years. He won the Section IV championship, he was fourth at States and he did all this in his first year in cross country.

He was consistently one of the best runners in the state all year, and  finished 17th at the Eastbay Regional Meet. He helped Corning capture  the state title, and helped them sweep the top five spots at both the STAC Championships and the Section IV Championships.

Bange was The All-Region “Newcomer of the Fall.”

Micah Cornfield, junior, Corning soccer: Cornfield was a force all season for the Hawks. He suffered an injury late in the season and it appeared his season may be over.

Instead, he returned in the playoffs and netted the game-winner in  overtime against Ithaca in the sectional semifinals, and then was a  key to the Hawks winning the SectionIV title. Cornfield was an all-state pick this year, and had seven goals and eight assists in 11 games this year.

Cornfield was the All Southern Tier Boys Soccer “Player of the Year.”

Gannon Johnston, senior, Horseheads football: Johnston was nearly unblockable at times this year. Defensively he had 10 sacks and 13 tackles-for-a-loss. He also had an 88-yard pick-six for a touchdown, forced three fumbles, recovered a fumble and had 61 tackles on the season.

He was a force as an offensive linemen opening holes for Loomis and theHorseheads  run game.

Johnston was the All-Region “Lineman of the Year.”

Zion Laudermilch, senior, Wyalusing cross country: Laudermilch ended his career with a second straight state medal, and was the runner-up at the District IV, Class A Championships. He also led the Rams to an NTL Small School title.

Laudermilch was the Bradford County “Runner of the Year.”

Wyatt Hodlofski, senior, Troy soccer: Hodlofski, leading a young Troy team with his goal-scoring prowess — had more than half his team’s goals on the year — scoring 26 of the Trojans’ 51 goals.

He was named the Bradford County “Player of the Year.”

Noah Shedden, senior, NP-Mansfield cross country: Shedden won the NTL Coaches Invitational, placed third at the District IV Class AA race in Bloomsburg and brought home a State medal by finishing in 15th place at the PIAA meet in Hershey.

Shedden was the Tioga County (Pa.) “Runner of the Year.”

Andrew Green, junior, NP-Mansfield golf: Green finished the regular season with an 83 average and a low-round score of 76. He finished fourth at Districts, three strokes behind the champion. He shot a one-over 37 on the front nine at States, finished with a 79 and 15th place, three strokes from medaling.

Jonny Sherwood, senior, Newark Valley cross country: Sherwood placed 12th at the New York State Championships in a field of 132 competitors, and finished  in the top half of a field of 281 runners at the Federation meet.

Sherwood won the Section IV Class C title, beating 87 other runners and won the IAC crown over 75 other challengers.

He was the Tioga County (NY) “Runner of the Year.”
