By Lance LarcomNorthern Tier West Sports ReportTIOGA COUNTY — We have a few new faces on our weekly list, along with a returning honoree who this week had the highest scoring performance for a high school basketball player in the last 50 years.
WRESTLING
Easton Pequignot, NP-Liberty
The freshman went 5-1 at the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament, pinning his way back through the consolation bracket after a loss to the eventual tourney champ in his 160-pound bracket, helping the Mounties to an 8th-place finish out of 22 teams.
BOYS BASKETBALL
McGwire Painter, Cowanesque Valley
Painter scored an incredible 57 points in CV’s 94-68 win over Odessa-Montour. (Previously reported as 59 points scored by Painter, upon receiving CV’s scorebook, it was found that two points scored by Tucker St. Peter in the 2nd quarter were credited to Painter).
The senior had scored 12 in a 57-50 loss to Campbell-Savona the previous day.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Elizabeth Ritchie & Sidney Landis, NP-Liberty
Ritchie and Landis led the Lady Mounties to their first win of the season, scoring 13 and 10 points as NPL topped Galeton at the Canton Tournament.
