NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: NP-MANSFIELD SECOND-HALF COMEBACK FALLS SHORT IN LOSS TO ATHENS (2022-01-12)

MANSFIELD — North Penn-Mansfield fell behind by 20 points in the second quarter then chipped away at the Athen’s lead in the second half to pull to within four before giving up a 13-0 Wildcat run in the fourth quarter, falling 55-39 in NTL Large School boys basketball action Wednesday.

Brody Burleigh got the Tigers on the board to start the game, before an Athens run saw NP-Mansfield fall behind 12-2. Eli Shaw and Alex Davis each scored before Athens scored five straight to end the first frame up 17-6.

The Wildcats started the second quarter with an 11-2 run .. a pair of Burleigh free throws accounted for NPM’s points .. for a 28-8 lead. 

The Tigers closed the half with six straight points as Karson Dominick and Burleigh each scored and Eli Shaw hit a pair of free throws to cut the Athen’s lead to 28-14 at the break.

Coming out of the locker rooms, Athens scored four straight before Shaw got NP-Mansfield on the board in the half at the 5:28 mark of the third quarter.

Another Wildcat bucket, followed by a Burleigh basket and a lay-in by Sammy Lawrence kept the Athen’s lead at 14 .. 34-20.

After an Athen’s score, Burleigh connected inside and Andrew Green hit a pair of three pointers sandwiched around a Wildcat bucket to cut the lead to 10, followed by a Dominick free throw and a Lawrence bucket to pull the Tigers to within eight at the end of the third.

Lawrence hit a three pointer to open the final quarter, pulling the Tigers to within four at 38-34.

Athens then squashed any thoughts of a North Penn-Mansfield comeback by scoring the next 13 points. By the time Davis hit a floater to stop the Athen’s run, only 1:35 was left and the Athen’s lead stood at 51-36.

A late Shaw three completed the Tiger’s scoring and Athens ran out the clock on the 55-39 win.

Burleigh finished with 10 points to lead the Tigers, while Shaw added nine points and Lawrence had seven.

Green scored six points, while Davis added four and Dominick finished with three points.

The Tigers fall to 7-2 with the loss. They are scheduled to return to action Friday when they visit Towanda.
