NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: WELLSBORO OVERCOMES SLOW START TO TOP TOWANDA (2022-01-19)

TOWANDA — Wellsboro gave up 27 first-quarter points to open their game with Towanda, tightened up on defense and chipped away at the deficit and took down the Black Knights 59-52 in NTL Large School boys basketball action Wednesday.

Conner Adams and Liam Manning each scored six points in the first quarter, but the Hornets fell behind 27-16, before limiting the Knights to just a pair of buckets in the second. 

Darryn Callahan scored six points in the second and Manning added another four to draw the Hornets to within a point at the break, 31-30.

In the third quarter, Wellsboro took over the lead and outscored Towanda 10-7 to set themselves up with a 40-38 lead entering the final frame.

The Hornets gave up 14 points to the Knights, but Manning, Callahan and Adams each scored six points to lead Wellsboro to the win.

Manning finished with 20 points and added eight rebounds, while Callahan recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards.

Adams added 14 points and handed out five assists, while Cam Brought had four points, Hayes Campbell scored three points and Peyton McClure chipped in with a point.

The Hornets improve to 9-2 on the season with the win. They are scheduled to visit Sayre Friday.
