WYALUSING — There was very little NPL’s Derek Litzelman couldn’t do on Monday, as he led the Mounties to 60-30 win over Wyalusing during NTL boys’ basketball action.

Litzelman finished with a triple double of 17 points, 11 boards, and 12 assists as he hit shots from deep, got to the basket, and found his teammates, particularly Daniel Sherant, who had a double-double of 21 points and 10 boards.

“I think it’s my first one ever in my career,” Litzelman said. “It’s one of the harder things to do.”

Sherant was a big help in helping Litzelman earn the honors, finishing at least half of his assists with lay-ups underneath.

“I saw guys on the baseline quite a bit,” explained Litzelman. “They would pressure me, trying to double, so instead of just forcing a shot, I thought to hit the open guy and see what they can do.”

NPL jumped out to a 21-8 first quarter lead, and never really allowed Wyalusing to get back in the game. Every time it looked like the Rams were going to make a run the Mounties had an answer.

Bryce Boyer added nine points, five boards, and three steals, while Blake Oakley netted six points. Jackson Brion had five points to go with two steals, as Brady Stetter finished with two points and five boards. Adam Wheeland chipped in with three steals, as well.

Trehnon Hugo led Wyalusing with 10 points, as Thomas Oliver netted six. Parker Petlock had five, Nick Vanderpool and Brody Fuhrey had three points each, with Zibiah Walton adding two, and Will McBride rounding out the scorers with one.

The Rams played without leading scorer Blake Morningstar for the second straight game.

Wyalusing came out strong, as Vanderpool hit Walton for a lay-up on the first possession of the game. Litzelman would find Sherant for back to back buckets to give them a 4-2 lead, but a Hugo jumper tied it up two minutes into the game.

That’s when NPL went on an 8-0 run, which included two 3-balls, to take a 12-4 lead. Vanderpool ended the drought with an athletic lay-up, cutting it to 12-6 with 2:16 on the clock, but Brion came back with his team’s third 3-ball of the quarter.

A Hugo jumper cut it to 15-8, but NPL ended the quarter with a 6-0 run to go up 21-8, including a buzzer beating jumper from Litzelman.

The Mounties would extend their lead to 27-8 early in the third, but back to back 3-balls from Oliver cut it to 27-14.

However, Litzelman took over for NPL, finding Boyer for a bucket, then getting to the basket for a lay-up to make it 31-14.

Petlock would get a bucket in the final minute to make it a 31-16 NPL lead at the break.

Hugo hit a jumper to start the third quarter, making it a 13-point lead as the Rams looked to be getting back into it.

However, five straight points from NPL saw them extend the lead to 36-18. A Petlock 3-ball followed by another Hugo jumper cut it to 36-23, but it never got closer than that.

Litzelman hit a jump shot, then found Sherant for back to back buckets to put them up 42-23. After a Wyalusing free throw Litzelman assisted on a Boyer basket, then scored the quarters’ final points on a lay-up to put his team up 46-24.

Fuhrey opened the fourth with a 3-ball for the Rams, but Litzelman answered with a lay-up at the other end. Hugo hit a jumper to get it under 20, but the Rams didn’t score again with five-and-a-half minutes later, by which point NPL had taken a 55-29 lead.

The Mounties improve to 3-3 in the league as they look to bounce back after their loss to Sayre last week. They’re battling with NEB (2-2), Canton (2-3), and the Redskins (2-4) for the Small School crown in a wide open divisional race. They'll visit Williamson on Wednesday.
