
HUGHESVILLE — The Wellsboro Lady Hornets dropped to 0-3 to start their season, falling 18-8 in five innings to Hughesville here Wednesday.
Hughesville scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning, then added a run in the second and four in both the third and fourth innings.
After being held scoreless for the first two innings, the Lady Hornets' offense produced a pair of runs in the third inning.
Senior Maddi Bordas got things started with a single to left, followed by senior Jordyn Abernathy reaching on an error. A single by sophomore Lexi Urena scored Bordas before senior Rylie Boyce singled to score Abernathy, making it a 10-2 game.
Junior Abby Owlett led off the fourth with a single, followed by a base hit from junior Caralyn Warner. Bordas then connected on a triple, scoring both Owlett and Warner and cutting the lead to 14-4.
In the fifth inning, senior Mariah Borden, Warner, and sophomore Arianah Lawton all reached base and scored, Bordas had another extra base hit, this time a double, then later scored on an Abernathy single to center field.
Wellsboro had 11 hits in the game, led by Bordas' 3-for-3, 4 RBI performance at the plate. Abernathy and Urena were both 2-for-4, Borden, Owlett, and Lawton were all 1-for-3, and Boyce was 1-for-4.
Boyce was credited with the loss, allowing 18 runs on 7 hits with 13 walks and a strikeout.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 0-3 (0-2 NTL-I). The team is scheduled to be back in action on Thursday at Northeast Bradford.
