WESTFIELD — Cowanesque Valley earned their third win of the season here Saturday, using three second-half scores to pull away for a 28-6, NTL small-school division win over Sayre.
The Indians racked up over 360 yards of offense in the game, led by Fletcher Good’s 137 yards rushing, Dave Hess’ 150 combined receiving and rushing yards and Graham Hess’ 107 passing yards.
Both teams started slow, trading a punt and a turnover on downs until CV took over at their own 32 with six minutes left in the first quarter. An option pitch to Dave Hess from brother Graham gained 25 yards on the six-play drive and Good would finish it off with a 27-yard jaunt around the left side for the score. The Indians’ two-point attempt was stuffed and CV led 6-0 with 2:55 on the clock.
A pair of Sayre punts sandwiched around a CV turnover on downs took the game into the second quarter, where Graham Hess found Dave Hess on the left sideline and the younger Hess broke several tackles to get inside the Redskins’ five-yard line. But Hess would fumble the ball into the end zone and Sayre took over at their own 20.
The Redskins went on their best drive of the game after the touchback, marching 65 yards in 13 plays, but Graham Hess came up with a big interception with just 22 seconds until the half and the Indians would settle for a 6-0 halftime lead.
CV continued to play bend-don’t-break defense in the second half as Sayre found some success moving the ball but was unable to score. With 55 seconds left in the third quarter, Graham Hess scored from a yard out and the Indians led 12-0 following another failed two-point attempt.
Sayre cut the lead in half at 12-6 midway through the fourth quarter on a Bennett 4-yard touchdown, but CV answered with a pair of scores just 36 seconds apart when Ben Freeman scored from a yard out with 1:59 on the clock and Hess found Lowell Baker for a 28-yard TD pass with 1:22 remaining.
Both fourth-quarter two-point attempts were good for CV as Graham Hess found Dave in the end zone for a 20-6 lead and then hit Good to provide the 28-6 final.
Graham Hess completed five passes for 107 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 36 yards and another score. Good added 20 yards receiving and a TD to his 137 yards on the ground, while Dave Hess ran for 77 yards and had 78 yards receiving.
Defensively, the Indians were led by Joel Hultz with 11 tackles while Good had nine, Ean Bump had seven and Kegan Lane had six stops.
CV improves to 3-2 on the season with the win. They’ll visit Blossburg next Friday night to take on the North Penn-Mansfield Panthers .. 1-4 on the year.
