CATAWISSA — North Penn-Mansfield gave up 56 first-half points to six-time defending State Champion Southern Columbia and the Panthers would fall to the No. 3 seed Tigers 62-20 in the District 4 2A quarterfinals here Saturday night.
The Panthers finished with nearly 300 yards of offense and three second-half scores in the loss as senior quarterback Karson Dominick threw 36 times in the game and completed 13 passes for 186 yards and a TD and junior Cooper Shaw had a rushing touchdown, caught Dominick’s TD pass and threw a touchdown .. to Dominick.
North Penn-Mansfield leading rusher Cale Wagner was out due to an injury, and with Southern’s vaunted run defense to face, the Panthers’ game plan focused on the passing game. Until NPM’s final drive of the first half .. when the Panthers ran out the first-half clock .. only three rushing attempts had been made and Dominick was 9-for-32 passing.
The Tigers scored touchdowns on two of their first four offensive plays of the game, and also added a pair of defensive scores in the first half en route to building a 56-0 halftime lead. The workmanlike performance from the Tigers featured 491 yards of offense, including 373 on the ground. No single player went over 100 yards rushing for Southern Columbia.
All six of Southern’s first half offensive touchdowns came on drives that lasted no more than three plays.
Gavin Garcia capped a three-play drive on Southern’s opening possession with a 20-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 8-0 just over a minute into the game, and after the Panthers turned it over on downs at the Southern 25 on their subsequent possession, Blake Wise hit Kyle Christman in stride for a 75-yard touchdown reception to make it 15-0.
After the Tigers lost a fumble at the goal line on their next possession, the Panthers gave the ball right back with a fumble that set Southern up at the NPM 12 yard line. An eight-yard TD run as time expired in the first quarter gave Southern a 22-0 lead.
On North Penn-Mansfield’s subsequent possession, a tipped Dominick pass found its way into a Southern defender’s hands and with the 56-yard pick-six the Tigers led 30-0.
That was the first of five touchdowns in the second quarter for the Tigers and the last .. a 24-yard run .. came just before the break as the Tigers emptied their bench prior to halftime.
The Tigers’ defense held North Penn-Mansfield to just four rushing yards in the first half on seven attempts while Shaw finished with 35 yards and a TD on seven carries, George Perry added 21 yards on nine attempts and Luke Kreger carried the ball twice for three yards.
The Panthers opened the second half with their first score .. an 18 yard hook-up from Dominick to Shaw .. and the duo repeated the connection for the two-point conversion and the score was 56-8 with 9:16 left in the third.
Southern added their final score with four minutes left in the third frame and led 62-8 going into the fourth, when Shaw bullied his way in on a QB sneak from two yards out on the first play of the final quarter and the score was 62-14, Southern Columbia.
Just a minute and a half later Shaw would find Dominick on a go-route and the 45-yard TD would provide the 62-20 final score.
North Penn-Mansfield finishes their season with a 4-7 record. Look for a season recap on the Panthers and all of our West squads soon at ntwsportsreport.com.
