WESTFIELD — Senior Jordan Vargeson placed second in the NTL to highlight the Cowanesque Valley golf team’s 2023 season.
The Indians finished 14-28 on the season and in sixth place in the seven-team NTL. Athens went undefeated at 42-0 to win the title, while Wyalusing was second (32-10), North Penn Mansfield was third (27-15), Wellsboro was fourth (17-25) and Towanda edged CV for fifth place (15-27). Sayre went winless and finished in last place.
The Indians had their lowest score of the season at Tomasso’s in Week 7, finishing fourth with a 365 aggregate score, and shot a 366 at their home course, River Valley, in Week 5.
Vargeson took low honors twice during the season .. in Week 5 at River Valley (76) and in Week 7 at Tomasso’s when he had his low-round of the season, a 74. He’d finish with an average of 81.43 .. two strokes behind league champ Evan Cooper of Athens’ 79.
Sophomore Danny Smith had CV’s next-low average of 96.43, good for 19th place in the NTL, and senior Nick West had a 96.86 average to place 21st. Both had a season-low round of 88 for the Indians.
Senior Adam Maynard had a 105.29 average and had a low round of 98 on the season, while sophomore Layla Hacket had a low of 99 and averaged a 107.50. Senior Kaden Cole had a 111 average in five matches while Ashtyn Burdick and Luke Hamilton each had a 120 average in limited varsity appearances.
Vargeson qualified for the District 4 championships with his sub-88 average and shot a 95 on Day One to end up tied for 24th place. He’d withdraw from the tourney after his first round, bringing the Indians’ 2023 season to an end.
