The highlight for our coverage area, which includes all of Chemung and Tioga counties, as well as Corning in N.Y., and Bradford and Tioga counties in Pa. — 24 schools in al, had to be the state football titles won by Waverly and Tioga — schools separated by just 13 miles.
Tioga (14-0) won its third straight Class D state title, and is currently riding a 41-game win streak, while Waverly (13-1) won its final 12 games en route to the Class C title. Waverly’s only loss was a 23-17 overtime thriller against Tioga in what is on the short list for “Game of the Year.”
The Elmira Express also won a Section IV, Class 3A title.
South of the Border, Troy took now seven-time defending state champion Southern Columbia to the limit in a 14-0 loss in the District 4, Class AA title game.
Cross-country enjoyed a tremendously successful fall in the region. Corning’s Sarah Lawson won her third straight Section IV title, and third straight state medial, while Owego’s Jaelyn Chrysler won the Section IV, Class B title, and placed eighth at States, and S-VE’s John Garrison won the Section IV, Class D title, and finished ninth at States.
South of the Border, Williamson’s Kristian Mizdail won his second state medal, and Northeast Bradford repeated as District 4 champs. NEB’s Gracelyn Laudermilch won a District 4 title, and a state medal, and Creed Dewing repeated as district champ, and won his third state medal.
On the volleyball hardwoods, Northeast Bradford won its first-ever District 4 title, while Candor won the Section IV, Class D championship, and advanced to the state semifinals, and Owego won the Class A crown. And, Elmira won its first-ever Section IV title.
On the soccer pitch, the Owego girls soccer won Section IV, Class A titles, and the boys won their straight straight title in spite of moving up to Class A. The Corning boys, and Elmira and Horseheads girls also won Section IV titles.
In the pool, Corning’s Angie McKane and Waverly’s Mira Kittle re-wrote their team’s respective record books, and set new pool and meet standards throughout Section IV.
Owego diver Kaelyn Katchuk won Section IV, Class B title, and placed sixth at States, and Corning’s Brooke Terwilliger won the Class A title, set a new 11-dive record in Section IV, and finished second in the State.
There’s more, plenty more, but all in all, it was a pretty good fall in The Sports Reports’ coverage area.
