INDIANA, PA — North Penn-Liberty took six wrestlers to the loaded Mid-Winter Mayhem Tournament on the campus of IUP this weekend and finished with 26 team points, led by an 8th place finish by Bryce Pequignot.
Pequignot (114 pounds) opened his tourney with a tech fall before losing to Bishop McCort freshman Eli Herring (25-6), the eventual 3rd place finisher. The sophomore then ran off three straight wins in the consolation bracket .. including a 4-1 win over Central Mountain’s Gavin Heverly, a 2024 3A District and Regional champ .. before falling to DuBois freshman Mateo Gallegos (21-3) and then to Peters Township sophomore Nicholas McGarrity (29-3) .. a 6th place AAA State place winner .. in the 7th/8th place match.
Freshman Bodhi Nickerson (107) went 0-2 in the tournament, losing by fall and then by a 7-6 decision, as did junior Charles Aumick (121 pounds), who was tech called and pinned.
Senior Brayden Pequignot opened his tourney with a pair of wins before falling to Abington Heights’ Mason Whitney (29-2) .. a 7th place 3A State finisher in ’24 .. and then to St. Mary’s junior Jayce Walter, which knocked Pequignot from the tournament.
After falling in his first match of the tourney, senior Riley Oakes (160) ran off three straight consolation wins before coming up just shy of the podium with a loss to Parkland junior Jorge Moya (21-9).
Senior Easton Pequignot (172) fell in his first match then got a win before being knocked from the tourney, beating Canton’s Blaine Wesneski in the consolation bracket.
The Mounties’ 26 team points from their half-dozen wrestlers left them in 50th place among the 57 competing teams. Team champ Bishop McCort (299 points) crowned five individual champs and had 11 wrestlers place.
