ATHENS — Wellsboro completed their season sweep of Athens here Thursday, downing the Wildcats 57-44 behind 25 points from Luke Rothermel.
The Hornets won their first match-up with Athens 55-38 back on January 4th.
On Thursday, Wellsboro jumped out to an early lead in the opening quarter as they outscored the Wildcats 13-4. Athens rallied in the second quarter and outscored the Hornets 16-14 to close the lead down to 27-20 at the half.
Athens made up more ground in the third frame, outscoring Wellsboro 17-13 to pull within 40-37 heading into the fourth quarter. Wellsboro outscored the Wildcats 17-7 behind 9 points from Rothermel down the stretch to complete the season sweep.
Rothermel led all scorers with 25 points while Colin Fletcher added 15 points and Mitchel Lechler added 10.
Griffin Morral scored 4 points, Marek Mascho chipped in with 2 points and Max Mascho was 1-for-2 at the foul line. Rothermel finished with 10 boards to finish with a double-double while Lechler had 4 assists and 3 steals, Fletcher grabbed 7 rebounds and made 3 steals and Max Mascho had 10 rebounds and 5 assists.
The win improves Wellsboro to 7-6 overall and 6-3 in the NTL Large School Division.
The Hornets travel to Hughesville Monday for a non-league contest.
