WELLSBORO — Down 25 points at halftime, the Lady Hornets held Athens to two second half baskets but the Lady Wildcats held Wellsboro off from the free throw line and won the large school game 54-35.
After a 19-3 first quarter in favor of Athens, the Wildcats extended their lead to 37-12 with an 18-9 second quarter.
Teagan Novinger and Ady Frantz scored 4 points each as the Hornets doubled up Athens 12-6 in the third quarter before Wellsboro matched the Wildcats 11-11 in the final frame as Athens scored all of their points from the free throw line.
Athens finished 15-26 from the line, while Chloe Brandenburg made both of Wellsboro’s two lone attempts.
Brandenburg finished with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, while Novinger had 12 points, Frantz had 4 points and Paige Logsdon, Lily Wagner and Rylee Coolidge had 2 points each in the loss.
Wellsboro falls to 4-7 overall on the season and is scheduled to return to action Tuesday when they visit Liberty to take on the Lady Mounties.
