
WESTFIELD — Wellsboro built a lead on CV here Friday and was able to hold the Lady Indians off behind a record-tying performance from freshman pitcher Ady Frantz as the Hornets won, 5-3.
Frantz threw all seven innings and allowed three runs (2 earned) on three base hits and four walks and tied the Wellsboro program record with 16 strikeouts.
The Lady Hornets opened the game’s scoring in the second inning when Delaney Morral reached base on an error, Kaylee Frazier singled and Harleigh Cleveland drove them both in with a single to give Wellsboro an early, 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Frantz singled, took second on a passed ball and stole third before fellow-freshman Teagan Novinger brought her home with a sacrifice fly to put the Hornets up 3-0.
CV got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Zeraya Wilson reached base on a dropped third strike, stole second, got to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice groundout by Ella Schaar to make it 3-1 Wellsboro.
The Lady Hornets got the run back in the fifth when Cleveland led off by being hit by a pitch, Rylee Coolidge walked and Novinger was hit as well, loading the bases. Morral drew a walk to score Cleveland and Wellsboro led 4-1 until the top of the seventh inning.
There, Frantz again helped her own cause with a leadoff double and Coolidge bunted her over to third. Frantz scored on a passed ball and the Hornets went up 5-1.
The Lady Indians opened their final at-bat by loading the bases with two hit batters .. Emerson West and Ella Krise .. and a walk to Eldridge, and scored when Bella Mascho was hit by a pitch and Wilson singled Eldridge home to cut the lead to 5-3. But Frantz recorded her record-tying 16th strikeout and got CV to hit into a double-play to end the game and seal the win for the Hornets.
Frantz finished with two hits (2B, 2 R) while Frazier (1 R) and Cleveland (1 R, 2 RBI) each had a hit and Novinger had an RBI.
Raegan Watson (2B) had two hits for CV while Wilson (1 R, 1 RBI) had one, Schaar and Mascho each had an RBI and West and Eldridge each scored a run.
Lilah LaBarron took the loss for CV, going all seven innings and allowing five runs (2 earned) on four hits and four walks with 10 strikeouts.
Wellsboro (4-7) is scheduled to host Coudersport for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday while CV (4-7) is scheduled to return to play next Wednesday, at Oswayo Valley.
