
ELKLAND — Cowanesque Valley and Williamson battled back and forth here Thursday, with the Lady Indians scoring the eventual game-winner in the top of the eighth inning to edge the Lady Warriors 9-8.
Williamson opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the second inning as Lexi Smalley drove in Laila Hackett, who had led off with a single, and Aubree Roe, who had walked.
CV took the lead in the third, using walks from Cassidy Andreason and Zeraya Wilson, a single by Lilah LaBarron and a pair of Williamson errors off the bats of Raegan Watson and Ella Churchill to score four runs.
The Lady Indians added to their lead in the fourth when Wilson and Watson each doubled to put the Indians up 5-2.
The Warriors put together a big bottom half of the fourth as Hackett and Roe singled and Alexis Sprague reached base on an error. Smalley was hit by a pitch to bring Hackett home, Thomas singled and Olivia Gee doubled, giving Williamson back the lead at 6-5.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Wilson delivered a two-out single for CV, followed by a single from Watson. Ashley Woodring then cleared the bases, driving one to the deep fence at the Durk Sherman Memorial Complex for an in-the-park home run and an 8-6 CV lead.
But Williamson came up with some two-out magic of their own in the bottom of the sixth as Gee singled, Savanna Dean walked and Joelie Stephens plated them both with a single to tie the game up at 8-all.
A scoreless seventh inning brought Wilson up for CV in the top of the eighth and she singled to give the Lady Indians a base runner. Watson flew out to center, and Smalley threw Wilson out trying to steal, leaving things up to Woodring once again. The senior delivered, driving a ball to centerfield that was mishandled, allowing Woodring to once again round all the bases to give CV a 9-8 lead.
CV hurler Lilah LaBarron got a leadoff fly-out but then walked Thomas. Shortstop Wilson would come through for the Indians, however, fielding a pair of ground balls for the final two outs of the game.
Williamson out-hit CV .. 13-10 .. as Gee (2B, RBI, R), Kaegan Short (2B, R), Smalley (3 RBI, R), Thomas (2 RBI) and Hackett (2 R) each had two base hits, while Stephens (2 RBI), Roe (1 R) and Sprague (1 R) had one each and Dean scored a run.
LaBarron (RBI, R) had three base hits for CV while Wilson (2B, 3 R), Ella Churchill and Watson (RBI, 2 R) had two each, Woodring (5 RBI, 2 R) had the homer and Andreason scored.
Thomas was tagged with the loss for Williamson, going eight innings and giving up nine runs (5 earned) on 10 hits and three walks with nine strikeouts, while LaBarron go the win, also going all eight innings and allowing eight runs (7 earned) on 13 base hits and three walks with seven K’s.
Cowanesque Valley improves to 6-7 on the season with the win. They’re scheduled to next host Sayre, on Tuesday, while the Warriors (7-6) are set to host Addison (NY) on Friday.
