
WILLIAMSPORT — Wellsboro rallied late to force extra innings at South Williamsport Saturday, but the host Mounties eked out a 5-4 walk-off win over the Hornets in the bottom of the 9th inning.
Wellsboro struck first in the game when Marek Mascho delivered a two-out single in the first inning and Coen Tennis drove Mascho in with a double to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
The Mounties answered with a run in the bottom of the first and the 1-1 tie lasted until the Mounties added another run in the bottom of the third frame, and increased their lead to 3-1 with a run in the fifth.
Wellsboro cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth when Tennis singled and would eventually score on a Gabriel Cuneo sac fly, but SW got the run back in the bottom of the sixth to keep the lead at two .. 4-2.
In their last chance, Wellsboro got singles from Cameron Owlett and Alec Magli and Tennis again came up with the timely hit, driving both runners in to tie the game up at 4-all.
After holding the Mounties in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, and a scoreless eighth and top of the ninth, Wellsboro allowed SW to load the bases on three walks, with a sac bunt out in between. Second baseman Cuneo made a nice play to get the lead runner at home and get the second out, but a single from South plated the winning run and the Mounties escaped with the win.
Tennis finished with three base hits in the game and added three RBI and a run scored, while Magli, Marek Mascho and Cameron Owlett each had a hit and a run scored. Max Mascho, Gabe Sprouse and Dustin Owlett each had a base hit while Cuneo had an RBI.
Sprouse started on the mound for the Hornets and went six and two-third innings, allowing four runs (3 earned) on six hits and two walks with one strikeout. Marek Mascho finished, going two innings and giving up one earned run on one hit and five walks.
Wellsboro (6-8) is scheduled to return to action Tuesday against Wyalusing.
