NTL BASEBALL: WELLSBORO CONTINUES PLAYOFF PUSH WITH WIN OVER ATHENS (2025-05-11)

ATHENS — Wellsboro avenged an earlier season loss to Athens and continued their playoff push Sunday, beating the Wildcats 8-5 for their sixth win in their last eight games and getting back to a .500 record.

Sophomore Max Mascho led the Hornets at the plate with three base hits and three runs batted in and threw the final four and a third innings on the mound, allowing no hits and striking out eight Athens’ batters.

After Athens’ took a one run lead in the first inning, Wellsboro struck for four runs in the top of the second, using singles from Coen Tennis, Dustin Owlett, Max Mascho and Gabe Sprouse, a bunt single by Gabe Cuneo and Ryder Bowen getting hit by a pitch to go up 4-1.

Athens tied the game up at 4-all with three runs in the home half of the third inning, but the Hornets re-took the lead in the top of the fourth when Cuneo singled and Max Mascho doubled to score Cuneo, Cameron Owlett singled and Alec Magli doubled to score Mascho. Owlett would score on a passed ball and Wellsboro was up 7-4.

The home Wildcats scored their final run in the bottom of the fourth and Wellsboro used a two-out single from Cuneo and an RBI single from Max Mascho to tack on their final run.

Max Mascho dominated the Athens’ lineup the rest of the way, not allowing a baserunner and sriking out six .. including the side in the Wildcats’ final at-bat .. to seal the win for the Hornets. 

Cuneo finished with three base hits for Wellsboro and scored three runs, while Tennis had two hits and scored. Magli had a double and an RBI, Sprouse had a hit and two RBI, Dustin Owlett had a hit, an RBI and scored a run and Cameron Owlett had a hit and scored.

Marek Mascho started on the mound for Wellsboro and lasted two and two-third innings before giving way to Max Mascho, allowing four runs (1 earned) on three hits and a walk with one strikeout.

With their sixth win in their last eight, the Hornets even their season record at 9-9. They’re scheduled to host Williamson on Monday.
