There were some big performances this year on the boys’ side in track & field on both sides of the border.
Tioga junior Gavin Albrecht had the biggest moment, achieving new heights by wining a New York State Track & Field Championships title in the pole vault at 15-feet.
Midway through the season, he set a school record of 14-feet, 7-inches, then broke it again at the State meet.
He was also strong in the 100 and long jump, earning him The Sports Reports' "Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year."
Corning’s Jaxyn Mahoney broke a 15-year old school record in the 800-meter run with a 1:54.08, placing fourth at the New York State Track & Field Championships. He was also on the state qualifying 4-by-800 relay team.
That’s good enough to make him the "Boys Track Athlete of the Year."
Troy’s Ben Warburton reached the state podium in the long jump, taking fourth at 22-feet, 2 3/4-inches at the PIAA Championships. He had a season-best of 22-feet, 9 3/4-inches.
Warburton also won District IV titles in the long jump and the 200-meter dash (22.38), while getting on the podium in the 100, earning him the "Boys Field Athlete of the Year" honors.
In his first year of varsity track, Troy’s Joseph Frye was a Swiss Army Knife, finding success wherever he went. He jumped over 20-feet in the long jump, while running 23.5 in the 200, and 11.5 in the 100, which was more than enough to make him the "Newcomer of the Year."
Troy coach Matt Geer led the Trojans to their second straight NTL title. They pulled away from Wellsboro and Athens in the rain-soaked event, despite missing several key point scorers from a year ago.
Geer is the "Coach of the Year."
Corning’s 4-by-400 relay of Dexter Badger, Wyatt McDonald, Charles Warner, and Ryan Calkins ran 3:25.75 at the Section IV State Qualifiers, earning them the "Relay of the Year" honors.
