TOP 20 HIGHLIGHTS OF 2024-'25 IN THE WEST .. No. 1 .. PIPER HOPRICH (2025-08-10) ![]() TIOGA COUNTY — As we are just days away from the start of the 2025 Fall sports season, let’s take a final look back at the Top 20 highlights of the 2024-’25 sports year here in the West. * Just Outside the Top 20 .. Williamson Girls Soccer Head Coach Felicia Hackett led the veteran Lady Warriors to a 12-6 record and into the D IV playoffs in her first season at the helm. CV Football Beats NP-Mansfield in Week 9 for 4th Win Cowanesque Valley took a 17-0 lead and stifled a North Penn-Mansfield second half comeback attempt to earn a 23-15 win over the host Panthers in Week 9 .. the first win for the Indians against the Panthers in quite some time. Graham Hess completed 11-of-17 passing attempts on the night for 151 yards and two scores, adding 62 yards on the ground on 10 carries and a 23 yard reception, while Jeavon Eick caught three balls for 68 yards and two TDs in the game. Dave Hess ran for 29 yards on 10 carries, caught one pass for 14 yards and completed the 23 yard pass to brother Graham and Luke Sottolano had a TD. No. 20 Wellsboro Wrestling Head Coach Bryce Bitner enjoyed a historic season in both boys and girls wrestling. Senior Ryder Bowen became Wellsboro’s first North Section champ since 2017 and the Hornets’ first East Regional qualifier since 2013. In the girls’ wrestling team’s inaugural season, Bitner took six wrestlers to Districts and qualified one .. Jordyn Rumsey .. to Regionals with two others .. freshman Isla Twoey and senior Megan Robbins .. coming up just shy. No. 19 North Penn-Mansfield Boys Basketball 20-Win Season The Tigers went 15-2 in the NTL .. with both losses coming to District champ Troy .. and finished 21-6 on the year. No. 18 Williamson Volleyball Makes Strides in ’24 The Williamson volleyball team went 12-4 in the regular season .. with a win over large school champ Troy, a loss to District 4 2A champ Wellsboro and two losses to Class A champ NEB .. and beat perennial-powerhouse North Penn-Liberty in the first round of the District 4 Class 2A playoffs. No. 17 North Penn-Liberty Softball Avenges Streak-Ending Loss to Athens The young Lady Mounties took a 50 game winning streak into their first match-up with eventual large school and District 4 Class 4A champ Athens on April 18th and fell 5-1, but in the rematch on May 6th, NP-Liberty eked out a 1-0 win to hand the Lady Wildcats their lone loss of the regular season. No. 16 North Penn-Mansfield Football Edges Wellsboro for Morty Trophy The Panthers and Hornets were each 2-7 as they met in the Morton F. Jones Trophy game for each teams’ season finale. Wellsboro jumped out to a 14-0 lead behind a pair of Ryder Bowen TD’s, but Panther senior QB Cooper Shaw would finish his final high school game with 155 yards rushing and 117 yards through the air on 7-17 passing with all four of the Panthers’ TDs to lead NP-Mansfield to the win. No. 15 North Penn-Mansfield Golf Head Coach Shawn Mitchelltree and the Tigers finished 27-8-1 in the NTL, behind only league and District 4 Class 3A champ Athens, and sent two golfers to States .. junior Andy Hermansen and senior Tate Strange. No. 14 Wellsboro Boys Tennis Wins 5th Straight NTL title Head Coach Andy Borzok and The Hornets finished 6-0 in the league and 11-6 overall to win their 5th straight NTL championship .. and their 7th in eight years .. behind a 14-1 season by No. 3 singles’ player Mason Brill and a 13-5 record by No. 2 Lucas Cuneo. No. 13 Wellsboro Swimmers Collect District Hardware Freshmen Matthew Robbins and Piper Anderegg each brought home a pair of medals at the District IV Swimming Championships .. Robbins swam a 24.12 in the 50 Free and a 52.25 in the 100 Free, both personal bests, to bring home two bronze medals, while Anderegg swam a 2:05.56 in the 200 Free to finish on the podium in 4th place and placed 3rd in the 500 Free in 5:40.80 for bronze. No. 12 Wellsboro Boys Soccer Claim 3rd Straight League Title Head Coach Todd Fitch led his Hornets to a 12-0 record in the NTL to claim their 3rd straight title, finished 15-5 overall and broke through to the semifinals of the District 4 Class 2A playoffs with a 1-0 win over Montoursville in the quarters. No. 11 NP-Mansfield’s James Knefley Has Great State XC Run Knefley, a sophomore, qualified for the PIAA Cross Country Championships by finishing 11th at Districts in 16:58.10 and placed 42nd at States with a 17:19. No. 10 North Penn-Liberty Wrestling Head Coach Craig Pequignot led the Mounties to a 12-7 dual meet record, had six wrestlers qualify for Districts .. junior Charles Aumick (12-11), senior Braden Route (14-19), freshman Bodhi Nickerson (31-13), senior Riley Oakes (36-12), sophomore Bryce Pequignot (36-7) and senior Brayden Pequignot (30-13) .. while sending four to regionals .. Nickerson, Oakes, Bryce Pequignot and Brayden Pequignot .. while both Brayden and Bryce Pequignot made their second straight trip to Hershey. Oakes and Bryce Pequignot both tied the program record for wins in a season .. 36 .. while Brayden Pequignot recorded the 100th win of his career, received the NTL and District 4 Sportsmanship Award and, along with Oakes, committed to wrestle at DII Millersville. No. 9 Luke Kreger Makes State Run in the High Jump for NP-Mansfield T&F Kreger, a junior, tied for second place at the District 4 Championships in the high jump with a height of 6’ 1” to qualify for the State Championships. No. 8 Williamson wrestling Head Coach David Wilcox and the Warriors went 16-5 in dual meets, won a District 4 Duals match, took second place at both the STWOA Holiday Classic and the South Williamsport Invite, went 6-0 at the Battle on the Border Duals and took third place at the North Sectional. Williamson had nine wrestlers record at least 22 wins .. including freshmen Zander Wilson (43-3), Walker Hyde (28-10), Stevie Olson (22-13) and Kohen Flynn (22-14), juniors Luke Sottolano (39-11), Ben Freeman (29-10) and Anthony Baker (22-11) and seniors Hunter Simonds (32-12) and Tim Freeman (25-18), while five Warriors qualified for Districts .. Wilson, Sottolano, Ben Freeman, Tim Freeman and Noah Robinson, sr., (14-7), three wrestled at Regionals .. Wilson, Sottolano and Simonds .. and Wilson and Sottolano made their first trip to States. No. 7 Aiden O’Neil Earns State Pole Vault Medal The senior cleared 14’ at Districts to finish 3rd and qualify for the State Championships, where he tied for 8th place (13’). No. 6 Lauren Kosek (XC) Kosek followed up her runner-up finish at Districts (18:21.20) with a 6th place medal at States (19:12) .. where the sophomore was the highest finisher from District 4. No. 5 Lauren Kosek (T&F) After collecting a 2nd place medal in the 3200m (10:59.38), a 4th place medal in the 1600m (5:09.04), a 10th place finish in the 4x400m relay and an 11th place finish in the 800m (2:29.35) at the District 4 Championships, Kosek brought home State hardware in the 3200m, placing 3rd (10:45.51), and finished 11th in the 1600m (5:09.66). No. 4 CV Baseball Wins District 4 Class A Title Cowanesque Valley won the NTL small school title and then took the Class A District 4 crown with wins over Benton and St. John Neumann. Head Coach Jamie St. Peter and the Indians finished the season 16-5 after winning a first round State playoff game and then falling to the eventual PIAA ‘A’ champ. No. 3 NP-Liberty Boys Basketball Wins District 4 ‘A’ Championship Head Coach Bear Mattison led the Mounties to a small school title and beat Millville, Bucktail and Lourdes Regional to win the District 4 Class A championship. No. 2 Wellsboro Claims District 4 2A Title The Lady Hornets went 12-2 in the NTL, falling to league champ Troy twice, before getting a third shot at the Trojans in the District 4 2A final where they came out on top 3-2 to win their first championship since 2015 .. when Head Coach Darci Pollack was a senior. _____ No. 1 Wellsboro’s Piper Hoprich Collects Titles, Medals in T&F Postseason Hoprich, just a sophomore, won District 4 titles in both the 100m (11.99) and 200m (24.55) dashes while also helping the Wellsboro girls’ 4x100m relay team qualify for States by placing 6th (50.36) and a 10th place finish in the 4x400m relay (4:27.79). At the PIAA Championships, Hoprich brought a 2nd-place medal back to Wellsboro in the 100m (11.99), placed 3rd in the 200m (24.96) and the 4x100m squad finished 27th (51.44). _____ |
