MANSFIELD — Wellsboro and North Penn-Mansfield played through two overtime periods but ultimately settled for a 1-1 draw in an NTL girls’ soccer match-up here Wednesday.
The Lady Hornets opened the scoring with two and a half minutes left in the first half when Kate Bryant found the back of the net to put Wellsboro up 1-0.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Brooke Wilcox scored off a Collette Frey assist to knot the match at 1-all. Neither team could connect on a game-winner through the rest of regulation or in either of the overtime periods.
Wellsboro out shot North Penn-Mansfield 17-10 and had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Mansfield keeper Avalon Rew recorded 16 saves while Jadyn Dunlap made nine stops in goal for the Lady Hornets.
The Hornets beat the Tigers 3-0 in their previous game, back on August 28th.
“I’m proud of the way our girls battled on the road against a red-hot Mansfield team,” said Wellsboro Coach Michael Reese following the game, “One tough bounce led to their goal, but we responded well and created chances. We just couldn’t get that second one to fall, but the effort and composure were there from start to finish.”
“This was a fun and exciting game to watch,” said North Penn-Mansfield Coach Maryann Wilcox, “Both teams played really well. Wellsboro took more shots than us, but the possession was about 50/50. It was a great effort by both teams.”
Wellsboro, now 10-5-1 on the season, is scheduled to host non-league Loyalsock (3-12) on Saturday, while North Penn-Mansfield (7-7-1) next hosts Meadowbrook (3-5), also on Saturday.
