Northern Tier West Sports ReportWELLSBORO — Third-year Head Coach Ron Doughtie and his experienced Hornets have been preparing for the upcoming boys’ basketball season with some lofty goals in mind.
“Our goal for this season is to compete for an NTL championship,” says Doughtie, “We know it’s a talented and deep league, but we feel we can compete at a high level with everyone in our district and league.”
Doughtie returns four starters from last season’s 10-12 squad, who just missed the District 4 playoffs and went 5-5 in the NTL Large School Division.
Senior Luke Rothermel (8.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.8 spg) leads the way. The ’24-’25 All-Tioga County second-teamer is joined by classmates Marek Mascho (4.4 ppg, 2.6 apg, 1.4 spg) and Jonathan Carl (6.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.8 spg) and junior Colin Fletcher (6.6 ppg, 28 3’s, 1.6 rpg, 1 apg, 84 % FT) .. all three of whom were named Honorable Mention All-Tioga County last year.
Doughtie points to a group of returning underclassmen as players he’ll be looking at for bigger contributions this season, including sophomores Griffin Morral and Ransom Schultz and juniors Ethan Keane and Gideon Lawton.
The Hornets have scrimmages scheduled on Tuesday at Muncy and on December 1st at home against Coudersport. They’ll open their 2025-’26 season at Loyalsock on December 5th before hosting their home opener on December 11th against Northeast Bradford.
