Northern Tier West Sports ReportLIBERTY — Head Coach Craig Pequignot and his North Penn-Liberty Mounties are enjoying the fruits of their recent successes in the form of increased numbers throughout the wrestling program, and are working hard to take the next step toward their ultimate goals.
“As a program, from youth to High School, we’re seeing great numbers,” says Pequignot, who enters his 11th season as Head Coach of the Mounties, “It’s very rewarding .. we're winning the numbers game and we need to now focus on getting better and on each wrestler to know their role and do their job everyday.”
The Mounties finished 12-7 overall last season and made the District 4 Duals, falling in the first round to Montgomery, while sending six wrestlers to Districts, four to Regionals and Brayden and Bryce Pequignot to States.
Bryce Pequignot returns for his junior season after rolling through the postseason at 114 pounds last year, winning Sectionals, Districts and Regionals and finishing 36-5 (14 TF, 6 F, 5 MD) after a failed weigh-in at States derailed his postseason run.
Sophomore Bodhi Nickerson will look to follow up on his very successful freshman season where he went 31-13 and placed 3rd at Sectionals, 7th at Districts and came within a win of qualifying for Regionals at 107.
Senior Charles Aumick also returns after going 12-11 last year and placing 4th at Sectionals to make Districts at 121 pounds.
With good numbers throughout (including a Varisty/JV roster of 19), Coach Pequignot will be looking to take advantage of a filled lineup, and to get his individual athletes to their goals.
“Our team goal is to make district duals,” says Pequignot, “and we want each wrestler to have a postseason goal and for them to meet those goals. Our program is heading in the right direction. We want state medals and a state champion.”
The Mounties are scheduled to compete at the DKI Invitational in Bloomsburg on December 5th and 6th before opening their dual meet season on December 9th at Northeast Bradford.
