Northern Tier West Sports ReportBLOOMSBURG — Wellsboro earned their 11th win of the season and qualified for the District IV 3A boys’ basketball playoffs Monday as the Hornets jumped out to an early seven point lead in their regular season finale and held off Central Columbia for a 55-50 win.
After Wellsboro took a 16-9 lead after a quarter of play, Central Columbia took the second quarter 17-11 to cut the Hornets’ lead to 27-26 at the halftime break.
The Hornets edged the Bluejays 16-15 in the third to go up 43-41 and held off CC with a 12-9 final frame.
Wellsboro used a balanced scoring attack to top Central, as Colin Fletcher led the way with 14 points while Griffin Morral had 12, Luke Rothermel had 10, Marek Mascho scored nine points, Jonathan Carl had eight points and James Doughtie chipped in with two points.
Rothermel collected a double-double with 15 rebounds and added five assists while Carl grabbed 10 boards, Fletcher had six, Morral had four rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot and Mascho handed out four assists.
The Hornets (11-11) had to win to get to .500 on the season and into the playoffs. They’ll be the No. 9 seed in a 3A field that includes NTL foes Towanda as the No. 3 seed, Troy as the No. 7 and North Penn-Mansfield as the No. 8.
