Northern Tier West Sports ReportHERSHEY — North Penn-Liberty sophomore Bodhi Nickerson successfully wrestled his way into medal contention on Day 2 of the PIAA Wrestling Championships Friday, while junior Bryce Pequignot saw his season come to an end one win shy of the podium.
Nickerson earned a pair of losers bracket wins Friday, starting with a 2-1 win over General McLane junior Luke Gray, where Nickerson scored a reversal with 25 seconds remaining to advance to the 4th round of consolations.
A first-period takedown would be the difference as Nickerson beat Central sophomore Ty Matthews 4-2 in the blood round and guaranteed himself a State medal. A 15-1 loss to Montoursville sophomore Branden Eisenhour, who had topped Nickerson in the District finals, leaves Nickerson in the 7th/8th place match on Saturday.
Nickerson gets a rematch against Benton freshman Korben Collae, who edged Nickerson 2-1 here Thursday.
Pequignot won his 3rd round consolation match Friday morning 6-2 over Phillipsburg-Osceola’s Caleb Hummel, but was pinned in his blood round bout by Bethlehem Catholic sophomore Tyden Shuman.
Pequignot finishes his junior season with a 35-7 record, a North Section title, runner-up finishes at Districts and Regionals and a pair of State wins.
Third, fifth and seventh place bouts will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
