Northern Tier West Sports ReportMANSFIELD — Wellsboro and North Penn-Mansfield opened their seasons here Tuesday as the Hornets used a pair of big innings to pull away from the Tigers for a 23-5 win.
The Hornets went up 3-2 after the first inning of play and led 4-3 after two. A 7-run third frame for Wellsboro and a run in the top of the fourth put them up 12-3 before Mansfield got a pair of runs back in the bottom half to make it 12-5. The Hornets exploded for an 11-run fifth inning to put the game away and provide the final score.
Marek Mascho had a big day at the plate for the Hornets with four base hits, including a pair of doubles, with five RBI and three runs scored. Coen Tennis also had four hits, with a double, and added two runs scored and an RBI.
Max Mascho had three hits, three RBI and a run scored while also earning the win for Wellsboro, throwing four innings and allowing five earned runs on seven base hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.
Gage Baltzley had two hits, three RBI and two runs scored, Griffin Morral had a double and scored three runs, Cameron Owlett had a hit, an RBI and three runs scored, Reed Richardson had a double, three RBI and scored three runs and Izaya Campbell had a hit, an RBI and scored once.
Silas Pietrzyk had ań RBI and a run scored while also throwing the fifth inning for Wellsboro and walking one with two Ks, Maddon Mascho and Colton Reese each had an RBI and Gabe Cuneo scored a run.
For Mansfield, Andy Hermansen had two base hits, an RBI and scored two runs, Noah Musser had a double and two RBI, Cam House and Peyton Greene each had a hit and a run scored and Jason hater and Isaac Sparks both had a hit.
The Tigers used five pitchers in the loss .. Harer (2 IP, 6H, 6R(6), 4BB, 3K), Sparks (1 IP, 2H, 5R(5), 6BB, 1K), Hermansen (1 IP, 1H, 1R(0), 1BB, 1K), Collin Oakes (1/3 IP, 8H, 11R(8), 2BB, 1K) and Greene (2/3 IP, 3BB).
Wellsboro (1-0) is scheduled to return to play Saturday at Jersey Shore, while North Penn-Mansfield is scheduled to host Towanda on Thursday.
