Northern Tier West Sports ReportTOWANDA — Wellsboro played even through four innings with the host Lady Black Knights here Tuesday, but Towanda used a three-run 5th inning to pull out a 4-2 NTL Large School win.
Towanda took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and Wellsboro tied it up in the third when Haylie Smith tripled and was sacrificed home by Ady Frantz.
After a scoreless fourth, Towanda plated three runs to take a 4-1 lead as they went to the sixth inning. Frantz walked and a Gena Fleming double moved Frantz to third. She’s make it home on a wild pitch to make it 4-2, but Towanda shut the Hornets down the rest of the way to earn the win.
Wellsboro had four hits to Towanda’s two, as Smith and Fleming each had two. Frantz had an RBI and scored a run and also pitched all six innings, allowing four runs (3 earned) on two hits and six walks with 10 strikeouts.
Wellsboro (1-3) is scheduled to return to action Thursday when they host Wyalusing.
