NTL SOFTBALL: WELLSBORO LADY HORNETS 2026 SEASON RECAP (2026-05-31)

WELLSBORO — A young Lady Hornets’ squad made a 4-win improvement in their 2026 season, saw program records broken and qualified for the District IV Class 3A playoffs for the first time since the 2019 season. 

Wellsboro finished 10-11 overall, which included runs of 0-2 to start, a 5-1 stretch, an 0-5 skid, another 5-1 run and an 0-2 finish to the year, with the final loss coming to eventual District IV champ Mifflinburg in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs.

During the regular season, the Lady Hornets had a few close losses, including 2-0 and 3-0 defeats to Athens, the Large School title winners.

Adelyn Frantz led Wellsboro from the circle and at the plate. The sophomore went 9-11 on the season, throwing 113 innings with a 2.69 ERA, 94 walks and 217 strikeouts .. setting a new season strikeout record for the Lady Hornets by 39 K’s.

Frantz collected 29 base hits for Wellsboro .. including a home run, six triples and seven doubles .. while batting .453 with 26 RBI, 19 runs scored and a .500 on-base-percentage. 

Freshman Haylie Smith made an impressive varsity debut, hitting .328 with 20 base hits .. including three triples and three doubles .. and added 27 runs scored, seven RBI, nine stolen bases and a .432 OBP.

The Hornets got solid production from a strong group of sophomores in Delaney Morral (.240 BA, 12 H, 12 R, 3 RBI, .367 OBP), Rylee Coolidge (.237 BA, 14 H, 17 R, 9 RBI, .361 OBP), Teagan Novinger (.226 BA, 12 H, 2-HR, 4 R, 13 RBI, .339 OBP) and Kaylee Frazier (.210 BA, 13 H, 8 R, 6 RBI, 5-2b) and contributions from freshmen Gena Fleming (.210 BA, 13 H, 10 R, 11 RBI, 4-2b) and Paityn Biery (.280 BA, 7 H, 3 RBI, .333 OBP), lone senior Harleigh Cleveland (.263 BA, 10 H, 9 R, .349 OBP) and junior Mazie Johnson (.200 BA, 8 H, 9 R, 3 RBI, .292 OBP).
