TROY — With the wintry conditions outdoors, it felt natural to be inside the warm confines of Troy’s Commons Building watching a basketball game, even in late-March, as the NTL honored its senior players with the return of the East-West boys’ basketball game, held for the first time since the 2019 season and won by the East, 109-86.

There was very little defense, and even less fouls called .. one .. but plenty of offense and lots of camaraderie and laughs as the East team, made up of players from Athens, Canton, Northeast Bradford, Sayre and Wyalusing, took on the West squad, with players from North Penn-Liberty, Cowanesque Valley, North Penn-Mansfield, Williamson and Troy.

The East team put six players in double figures, led by Canton’s Isaiah Niemczyk with 16 points. Fellow Warrior Caiden Williams added 14 points.

Athens’ trio of J.J. Babcock, Tucker Brown and Troy Pritchard scored 15, 13 and 10 points, while Sayre’s Josh Arnold hit double figures with 11 points. Babcock’s total came on a number of highlight-reel dunks, while Arnold led the East with three three-pointers.

Wyalusing’s Grady Cobb added seven points, while Athens’ Nalen Carling and NEB’s Sam Abell each had six points.

Sayre’s duo of Kannon Vanduzer and Dom Fabri each had four points, and NEB’s Dan Seeley rounded out the East scoring with three points.

Also playing for the East was Canton’s Cooper Kitchen and Wyalusing’s Kashawn Cameron and Abram Bennett.

For the West, Troy’s Ty Barrett led the way with 19 points, including five threes .. four in the second half.

Cowanesque Valley’s Gage Tilton hit four threes and finished with 16 points, while North Penn-Liberty’s Hunter Thompson hit double figures with 10 points.

Williamson’s Tristan Parker and Troy’s Ethan Vannoy each scored nine points, while Trojan teammate Devin Selleck added six points.

NP-Liberty’s Devin Bradley had four points and Mountie teammate Kyle Davis had three, while the rest of the West roster each scored two points .. NPL’s Noah Shedden, Williamson’s Everett Dominick, NP-Mansfield’s Eli Shaw, CV’s McGwire Painter and even Troy’s Zeb Oldroyd, who accomplished his score in a walking boot, thanks to a very sportsmanlike-assist from the East's J.J. Babcock.

Troy’s Barrett, the NTL Coaches’ Player of the Year, summed up the feelings of all of his fellow seniors from both squads while talking about playing one last high school basketball game.

“It was a lot of fun”, Barrett said, “playing against some of these guys for the last time, but even more .. playing with some of the guys you’ve battled against for the last four years.”

The East team was coached by Wyalusing’s Brent Keyes, while the West was led by Troy’s Steve Renzi.
