NTL SOFTBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY RODE OUTSTANDING SEASON ALL THE WAY TO STATE PLAYOFFS (2022-06-11)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
WESTFIELD — The Cowanesque Valley softball team enjoyed an outstanding 2022 season, going 16-4 in the regular season, upsetting two higher seeds in the District IV playoffs in Canton and No. 1 seed Northeast Bradford to reach the Class A final and earning a berth in the State championship tournament.

The Lady Indians would fall in the District final, 5-1 to Montgomery, and again in their first-round State playoff game against Old Forge, 2-1, but neither took away from the accomplishments made by CV during the ’22 season.

CV had a pair of six-game win streaks during the season, both times ended by close losses to Class AAA semifinalist North Penn-Liberty (4-1 and 3-2).

The Indians only other losses before the District final were to NTL Small School champ NEB (7-6 and 4-3), meaning CV’s four losses in the regular season came by a total of six runs. Notable wins during the regular season include a pair of victories over Canton and a 4-3 win over Large School-champ Wyalusing.

CV recorded six shutouts in the regular season, and two in the postseason. They held opponents to just one run four times, and two runs twice.

As a team, the Lady Indians averaged over 10 runs per game during the regular season, while surrendering only two runs per contest.

Individually, freshman Ashley Woodring led the Indians in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.578), hits (37), runs scored (36), doubles (9), triples (3), RBI (21) and home runs (6).

Maddie Millard, who gave the Indians a consistent, solid presence at second base, batted .394 and had 26 base hits. The sophomore scored 23 runs, had eight stolen bases and 13 RBI.

Ruby Sherman, who was CV’s No. 1 pitcher at 7-1 with a 2.67 ERA in 49 2/3 innings pitched and 69 strikeouts, was also a threat at the plate. The sophomore batted .391 and had 25 hits .. including six doubles and a home run ..18 runs scored and 15 RBI.

Leadoff batter Katie Adams hit .400 and had 22 hits, 18 runs and eight RBI, while third-baseman Keyana Thomas (.304, 19 hits, 5-2B, HR, 21 runs, 15 BB, 14 RBI), catcher Logan Hamilton (.375, 18 hits, 2-HR, 17 runs, 15 RBI) and infielder/pitcher Mackenzie Surine (.444, 16 hits, 2-2B, 2-3B, 12 runs, 7 RBI) all had big bats for the Indians.

Sophomore Tabbitha Piper (.306, 11 hits, 10 runs, 7 RBI), along with the Indians’ only two seniors, Megan Hyde (.306, 11 hits, 14 runs, 5 RBI) and Madison Hoopes (.304, 14 hits, 10 runs, 15 RBI) rounded out CV’s offensive attack.

Hyde threw the second most innings after Sherman, pitching 37 1/3 innings to go 6-3 with a 1.69 ERA and 48 K’s, while Surine threw 23 innings, went 3-0 and had a 2.13 ERA with 25 strikeouts.

Head Coach Mike Vargeson and assistant Kip Adams will welcome back the bulk of their lineup from this very successful season next year, save for the loss of graduating seniors Hyde and Hoopes.
