NORTHERN TIER WEST SPORTS REPORT: ALL-TIOGA COUNTY BASEBALL TEAM (2022-06-16)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — Our West baseball teams ran the gamut of successes this season .. but a common theme among them all were some outstanding, season-long performances by a number of players, the elite of which we honor with our All-Tioga County Baseball Teams.

Before I get started on naming the teams and the individual award winners, I want to take a moment to recognize and appreciate how difficult of a task it was to select the individual award winners, due to having so many worthy, deserving players vying for each.

With that, the Northern Tier West Sports Report is proud to announce our 2022 All-Tioga County Baseball Team and individual award winners.

All-Tioga County Player of the Year
Darryn Callahan, Wellsboro
I do not believe it is a slight to Callahan to say that this was a very hard decision to make, especially considering the caliber of other players considered and the numbers that they put up. Callahan didn’t lead his own Hornets’ team in every offensive category .. although he did in runs scored (32), doubles (6), triples (6), home runs (2), walks (15) and with his ridiculous .806 slugging percentage .. as teammate Cam Brought hit .484 to Callahan’s .419 and had a .595 on-base-percentage, second only to CV’s Mikey Sipps (.598) in the West, and had 30 base hits to Callahan’s 26 and 28 RBI to Callahan’s 27. Both Callahan and Brought were vital to Wellsboro’s season, with the deciding factor coming down to the opinion .. of me anyway .. that due to the threat of Callahan ending up in scoring position anytime he stepped to the plate, he saw less good, hittable pitches. Also, it can’t be ignored that Callahan also chewed up innings on the mound for 13-5-1 Wellsboro this season. While pitching is not what got the Slippery Rock-commit recruited to the PSAC, he went 2-3 over 22 innings pitched and had 23 strikeouts as the No. 3 arm in the rotation for the best team in the West.

All-Tioga County Offensive Player of the Year
Mikey Sipps, Cowanesque Valley & Cameron Brought, Wellsboro
Again, it should be a testament to both of these players that a decision between the two could not be made! The only discrepancies in these two’s numbers at all were in RBI’s, where Brought had 28 to Sipps’ 19 .. but Sipps’ 10 extra base hits on the season pulled him back even with Brought, who had three. Sipps, a senior, (.476 BA, .598 OBP, 30 hits, 25 runs scored, seven doubles, one triple, two home runs, 19 RBI, 13 walks, 21 SB) and Brought, a junior, (.484, .595, 30 hits, 22 runs scored, three doubles, 28 RBI, 13 walks) each had phenomenal seasons at the plate and were instrumental to their teams’ successes.

All-Tioga County Pitcher of the Year
McGwire Painter, Cowanesque Valley
The Indians’ senior ace didn’t compile a dream won-loss record in his senior season, going 3-7 for 11-10 CV, but that has a lot to do with being a .500 team’s ace. Painter wasn’t throwing any of his league-leading 58 innings in the Indians’ 10-0 or 24-1 wins over Oswayo Valley and Galeton, he was logging them in games with Athens, Canton, Wellsboro and Sayre. Painter faced 289 batters, holding them to a .180 average, with 78 strikeouts.

All-Tioga County Rookie of the Year
Alex Davis, North Penn-Mansfield
Davis’ freshman campaign included a .438 batting average and a .509 on-base-percentage. He collected 21 hits, including 10 doubles and a home run, and added 17 runs scored, 24 RBI, 11 stolen bases, five walks and went 1-1 on the mound, throwing 13 innings with a 3.23 ERA and eight K’s.

All-Tioga County Comeback Player of the Year
Kade Sottolano, Cowanesque Valley
While looking through stats of freshman and other “newcomers” to the league this season for our awards, Sottolano’s numbers had to be considered, especially knowing that the senior had missed last season due to his shoulder injury, and that 2020 was a lost year for everyone. But after finding that he had actually played as a freshman back in 2019 .. and played very well .. he could not be considered a newcomer. But the impact that the Edinboro wrestling-commit had for his team after being away for two full seasons has to be recognized, as Sottolano collected 20 hits this season, batting .339 with a .459 OBP. He had five doubles, a pair of home runs and 23 RBI’s for the Indians, while only striking out twice all season.
