NORTHERN TIER WEST SPORTS REPORT: SUPER 7 FEMALE ATHLETES OF THE SPRING (2022-06-20)

TIOGA COUNTY — Wellsboro senior Emma Coolidge had a busy Spring, helping lead a young Lady Hornets’ softball team as one of only three seniors on the roster, and in her “free time”, winning an NTL shot-put title and finishing runner-up in the javelin .. all earning her being named the Northern Tier West Sports Report "Female Athlete of the Spring".

Coolidge hit .510 for the Lady Hornets, with an on-base-percentage of .579, 25 hits .. including five home runs and three doubles .. and a .878 slugging percentage. The versatile senior played multiple positions in the field for Wellsboro, and added 21 runs scored, 18 RBI and only three strikeouts on the season. In Track & Field, the thrower had a 29-10 heave to win the NTL title in shot put, and her PR of 114-02 in the javelin left her in 2nd place at NTL’s and with a spot in the District IV Championships, where she finished 10th with a throw of 103-11.

Emma Coolidge, Wellsboro softball and Track & Field, senior .. * see above

Mackenzi Tice, North Penn-Liberty softball, sophomore .. Tice was integral in NPL’s turnaround, from both the pitcher’s circle and at the plate. The sophomore hit .453 and had an on-base-percentage of .518, racking up 34 hits on the season, including four doubles and a triple. She added 31 runs scored and 13 RBI, and was the Lady Mounties’ ace, throwing 80 2/3 innings while compiling a 7-3 record with a 2.00 ERA and 102 strikeouts.

Ashley Woodring, Cowanesque Valley softball, freshman .. Woodring burst onto the NTL softball scene quickly in her inaugural season, racking up hits (36) and hitting .578 while getting on base two out of every three times she came up to bat (.670). Woodring equaled her 18 singles on the year with 18 extra base hits (9-2B, 3-3B, 6-HR) to compile an astounding 1.078 slugging percentage, and added 36 runs scored, 21 RBI and just four strikeouts. 

Chelsea Hungerford, Williamson Track & Field, senior .. After a successful regular season for the Lady Warriors, Hungerford finished 2nd at the NTL meet in the 100 meter hurdles, 3rd in the 300 meter hurdles and was a member of the 4th-place 4x100 meter relay team. At Districts, she finished 12th in the 300 hurdles, won her preliminary heat in the 100 hurdles and her, Kyra Daley, Ella Churchill and Jade Colwell finished 13th in the 4x100.

Maddie Millard, Cowanesque Valley softball, sophomore .. Millard was a critical component of CV’s State playoff squad, locking down the middle infield from her spot on second base, while batting .394 with a .474 OBP, 26 base hits, 23 runs scored and 13 RBI. 

Mikenna Buchanan, Williamson softball, sophomore .. As Williamson’s pitcher, Buchanan didn’t benefit much from run support or the defense that more experienced teams in the league did, but she recorded 112 strikeouts, which is a huge achievement on any team. At the plate, she hit .560 and had a .641 OBP and an .860 slugging percentage. She had 28 base hits, with eight doubles, two triples and a home run .. that was hit as part of Buchanan hitting for the cycle in a game.

Ruby Sherman, Cowanesque Valley softball, sophomore .. Sherman went 7-1 as CV’s ace .. including two complete game shutouts .. while throwing 49 2/3 innings with 69 strikeouts (1.4 per inning pitched) and just 12 walks with a 2.66 ERA. At the plate, she hit .391 with an on-base-percentage of .494 and 25 hits, six doubles, one home run, 18 runs scored and 15 RBI.
