NORTHERN TIER WEST SPORTS REPORT: SUPER 7 MALE ATHLETES OF THE SPRING (2022-06-20)

TIOGA COUNTY — Williamson sophomore Kristian Mizdail qualified for and competed in three events at the PIAA Track & Field Championships, just missing the medal stand in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, and helped his 4x800 meter relay team bring a State silver medal back to Williamson. He is the Northern Tier West Sports Report "Male Athlete of the Spring”.

After placing 2nd in the 3200, 3rd in the 1600 and 2nd in the relay at the District IV Championships, Mizdail finished 11th in the 3200 at States, 12th in the 1600 and then struck silver along with teammates Owen Cummings, Nathaniel Welch and Duncan Kerr in the 4x800 relay.

Kristian Mizdail, Williamson Track & Field, sophomore .. *see above.

Darryn Callahan, Wellsboro baseball, senior .. Led the Hornets to a 13-5-1 record with a .419 BA, .595 OBP, .806 slugging %, 26 hits, 27 RBI, 32 runs scored, 6 doubles, 6 triples, 2 home runs, 15 walks; pitching: 2-3, 22 IP, 23 strikeouts. The Slippery Rock-bound Callahan was named the All-Tioga County Baseball Player of the Year.

Mikey Sipps, CV baseball, senior .. Led CV to an 11-10 record and into the District IV playoffs for a second straight season, both from the plate and behind it, where he caught for our All-Tioga County Pitcher of the Year, McGwire Painter. Sipps batted .476 with an OBP of .598, collecting 30 hits (7 doubles, a triple, 2 HR), 25 runs scored, 19 RBI, 13 walks and 21 stolen bases. Sipps shared our All-Tioga County Offensive Baseball Player of the Year award with Wellsboro’s Cameron Brought.

Aiden Gehman, Wellsboro T&F/Tennis, junior .. Gehman competed for the Hornets this season for the first time, as a junior, and the rookie jumper recorded leaps of over 40 feet in the triple jump and 20 feet in the long jump in just his second meet ever, at the Lock Haven Invite. Gehman set a PR of 42-03.75 in the triple jump at Lock Haven, placed 2nd at the NTL Championships and finished 11th at the District IV meet. His PR of 20-04.75 in the long jump followed a 5th place finish at Lock Haven, a 5th place finish at the NTL meet and just out of the medals at Districts, where he finished 9th. The Hornet also competed in the high jump, where he set a first-year PR of 5-06, and was a member of the NTL Champion Wellsboro tennis team, where he combined with four different teammates to go 8-5 in doubles throughout the season.

Owen Cummings, Williamson T&F, sophomore .. Cummings joined Mizdail, Nathaniel Welch and Duncan Kerr in bringing a PIAA silver medal back to Williamson in the 4x800 meter relay, and just missed the medal stand in the 1600, finishing 9th, after placing 2nd at Districts. Cummings helped Williamson to a Championship at the NTL meet, taking 1st in the 1600, 2nd in the 800 and 3rd in the 3200, along with winning along with his teammates in the 4x400. 

Cameron Brought, Wellsboro baseball, junior ..  Brought shared our All-Tioga County Offensive Player of the Year award with CV’s Mikey Sipps, as the Hornet batted .484 and got on base at a .595 clip. He added 30 hits, 22 runs scored, three doubles, 28 RBI, 13 walks and had 101 putouts at first base, committing zero errors on the season.

Gabe Kaufman, Williamson baseball, senior .. as one of only two Williamson seniors, helped a young Warrior team to their best season since 2017; .441 BA, .507 OBP, 26 hits, 21 runs, 6-2B, 3-3B, 2 HR, 27 RBI
