DISTRICT IV GIRLS BASKETBALL: LADY MOUNTIES FALL TO TOP-SEEDED MEADOWBROOK IN SEMIS (2023-02-25)
Northern Tier West Sports ReportMONTOURSVILLE — North Penn-Liberty started strong in their District IV Class A semifinal against Meadowbrook Christian (Milton) here Saturday, but the Lady Mounties couldn’t hold their early lead and fell 37-25 to the top-seeded Lady Lions.
Liz Ritchie opened the game with a bucket inside against Meadowbrook’s much-taller front court and the senior would lead the Mounties with nine points. Jaclyn Nelson added five points, Sidney Landis and Kaylee Graham each scored four points and Haley Litzelman chipped in with three points.
After a Litzelman three, Landis came up with a steal and the lay-in to put North Penn-Liberty up 7-0 with five minutes left in the first quarter. But Meadowbrook went on a 10-0 run and, after another Ritchie score and one of their own, took a 12-9 lead after one.
In a very slow second frame, Nelson and Graham each scored, with Graham’s basket giving the Lady Mounties a 13-12 lead with less than three minutes left in the first half. But Meadowbrook again went on a run, scoring the last five points of the first half for a 17-13 halftime lead, and coming out of the break with a 6-0 run to extend the lead to double digits at 23-13.
Nelson and Ritchie would each score three points in the 12-6 MCA third, as the Lady Lions took a 29-19 lead into the final quarter. MCA then completed a 7-0 run that started in the third period and led 34-19.
Nelson, Ritchie and Graham each scored in the fourth, but Meadowbrook would hit their fourth three of the game and add a pair of baskets and a free throw to secure the 37-25 win.
With the loss, North Penn-Liberty will next play for third place and the State-qualifying berth that comes with the bronze medal. The Lady Mounties will take on Lourdes Regional in the consolation final, who were 63-47 losers to No. 3 seed St. John Neumann.
