DISTRICT 4 BOYS BASKETBALL: MOUNTIES BEAT GALETON FOR SPOT IN STATES (2023-03-02)

WELLSBORO — North Penn-Liberty built a lead through three quarters and held Galeton to one point in the fourth to top the Tigers 39-21 in the District 4 Class A consolation final here Thursday, earning a spot in the State Championship Tournament.

Derek Litzelman led NP-Liberty with 22 points, including 10 in an 11-6 Mountie third quarter that extended their lead to 33-20. The senior then scored four of NPL’s six points in the final frame and the Mounties held Galeton to a single free throw to get the win.

Daniel Sherant added six points for the Mounties, while Adynn Wheeland and Jackson Brion each had three points, Blake Oakley and Bryce Boyer each scored two points and Glenn Oakley had one point.

In a slow first quarter, Blake Oakley would get NPL on the board and tie the game at two with five minutes left in the frame. A Litzelman bucket and a score by Sherant gave the Mounties an 8-4 lead after one.

Litzelman and Sherant scored four points each and Wheeland and Brion each hit a three in a 14-10 second quarter that gave NPL a 22-14 lead at the break. 

Litzelman’s big second half .. 14 of NPL’s 17 points .. helped the Mounties pull away and claim the third-place trophy, as well as the State Playoff berth that comes with it.

The Mounties, now 14-11 on the season, will play District 3 champ Linnville Hill Christian (19-0) in the first round of the PIAA Class A Championship on Friday, March 10 at a time/place to be determined.
