PIAA BOYS BASKETBALL: NP-MANSFIELD TO OPEN 3A PLAYOFFS ON THE ROAD (2023-03-09)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
McSHERRYSTOWN, PA — North Penn-Mansfield will look to extend an already-impressive season on Saturday when the Tigers travel to McSherrystown to take on Delone Catholic in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA boys’ basketball championship.

As the No. 5 seed in District 3, Delone Catholic (14-8) pulled off a pair of upsets to reach the finals in their first season of being 3A. They first beat a York Catholic team that had defeated them twice during the regular season, then beat top-seeded Colombia in the semifinals.

The Squires then lost the District final by 29 points to State-ranked Trinity (21-3), who feature a pair of high-level recruits in 6’ 11” Mikhailo Bednostin and 6’ 7” Adelphe Cisse.

A season ago, Delone Catholic made the State AA tourney with a third-place finish in District 3, losing to eventual State runner-up Constitution in the first round.

The Squires are led by their tallest starter, 6’ 3” Bryson Kopp and get scoring from 5’ 9” junior Cam Keller and junior PG Aidan Wittmer.

Junior Karson Dominick leads the Tigers (24-3) and averages 19 ppg, with senior Brody Burleigh adding 11 ppg and sophomores Cooper Shaw and Alex Davis adding nine points per game each. Both senior PG Sammy Lawrence (6 ppg) and senior sixth-man Andrew Green (4.2 ppg, 22 3’s) are capable of scoring well over their averages.

The winner of the game advances to the round of 16 and plays the winner between District 11 champ Executive Education (20-4) and District 12 fifth-place finisher String Theory (9-13).

Tickets for the 12:30 p.m. game must be purchased online in advance, HERE.
