2022-2023 ALL-TIOGA COUNTY BOYS BASKETBALL TEAMS & AWARDS (2023-03-20)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — It was a fun boys basketball season in the West this winter, as Tioga County teams accounted for 67 wins while NPM won an NTL-I title, Wellsboro won the Showdown, NP-Liberty and NP-Mansfield each made a run to the State playoffs and four of our five teams made the postseason. NTWSR would like to recognize our athletes who made all of those successes possible with our 2022-2023 All-Tioga County Boys Basketball Team and individual honors.

NP-Mansfield finished as champs of the NTL-I, going 10-0 against large-school competition, 16-0 in the league and 21-1 overall in the regular season. The Tigers scored nearly 60 points per game as they made a run to the State playoffs, led by All-Tioga County Player of the Year Karson Dominick.

Dominick scored 19.4 points per game for the 25-4 Tigers, scoring in double digits in all but three of NPM’s games, hitting for more than 20 points in 15 games and matching his career high of 33 points in a win over Williamson. The versatile junior went over 1,000 points for his career this season and stands at 1,176 points as he heads into his senior season next year.

Dominick hit 37 three pointers, went 94-124 on free throws (76%) and rounded out his All-State-worthy resume with 5.6 rebounds per game, 2.4 assists per game, 1.8 steals per game and 14 blocked shots.

North Penn-Liberty senior Derek Litzelman is the All-Tioga County Offensive Player of the Year and averaged 20 points per game for the 14-12 Mounties. Litzelman had 10 double-doubles and a triple-double of 17 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists in a win over Wyalusing this season, and added 8.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.2 steal per game for NPL as they went 12-10 in the regular season, won a pair of District 4 Class A playoff games to qualify for the State tournament and eventually fell to Linville Hill Christian in the opening round to end their season.

Litzelman needed 533 points this season to reach 1,000 for his career, and after averaging 17 per game through the first half of the regular season, increased his scoring to over 22 per game over the rest of the season and finished just 13 points shy of the milestone. Litzelman made 62 three pointers and hit 100-of-145 free throws (69%).

The All-Tioga County Defensive Player of the Year is Wellsboro senior guard Peyton McClure, who collected 56 steals and three rebounds per game while usually being tasked with guarding the opponent’s best scorer for the 18-7, NTL Showdown Champion Hornets. McClure added “stopper” to his reputation as the biggest long-range threat in the league while still averaging 14.4 points per game with 72 threes on the year.

North Penn-Liberty’s Daniel Sherant is the All-Tioga County Newcomer of the Year after stepping into the Mounties’ starting lineup as a senior this season and averaging 9.7 points and 6 rebounds per game, with 14 blocks. The center had a double-double with a career-high 22 points and 10 rebounds in a one-point loss to Sayre and followed it up with another double-double of 21 points and 10 boards in the Mounties’ next contest, a 60-30 win over Wyalusing.

Our final two honors both go to the NP-Mansfield Tigers, as Coach Kipper Burleigh and his assistants, Jed Wright and Rob Davis, are the All-Tioga County Boys Basketball Coaching Staff of the Year, and senior guard Andrew Green is the Sixth Man of the Year. Green came off the bench for the Tigers and averaged four points, two rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game while hitting 22 threes on the year.

Dominick, Litzelman and McClure are joined on the All-Tioga County First Team by Wellsboro seniors Conner Adams and Cam Brought.

The Second Team includes Sherant, senior Brody Burleigh and sophomore Cooper Shaw from NP-Mansfield, Fletcher Good from Cowanesque Valley and Wellsboro’s Hayes Campbell.

Our All-Tioga County Third Team consists of Green, senior Sammy Lawrence and sophomore Alex Davis from NP-Mansfield, senior Cayden Moon from CV and Williamson sophomore Jack Nolan.

The All-Rookie Team is led by Sherant and includes Moon, Nolan,  junior Jordan Vargeson from CV and sophomore Adynn Wheeland from NP-Liberty.
