HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY EARNS SEASON-OPENING WIN OVER GALETON (2023-03-22)

WESTFIELD — Cowanesque Valley used a 10-run fourth inning to pull away from Galeton and win their season and home opener here Wednesday, 14-4.

Jordan Vargeson earned the win for the Indians, going four innings and allowing one run on three hits, a walk and seven strikeouts. 

Galeton scored that run in the first inning, and the Indians answered with two runs of their own. Cayden Moon doubled, followed by Vargeson reaching on an error and an RBI single by Larson Swimley.

Up 2-1 in the bottom of the third, CV would add to their lead as Moon and Coen Kemp each walked and Vargeson delivered a two-run single and the Indians took a 4-1 lead.

The Indians would send 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, plating 10 runs on seven walks, three singles, two hit batters and an error. The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the fifth but couldn’t get to within 10 and CV secured the 14-4 win.

Swimley had a pair of base hits for CV and scored once, while Moon (double), Nick West, Hunter Simonds and Vargeson each added a hit and Kemp, Vargeson, Kaden Cole and Moon each scored two runs and Simonds scored once. Aspen Dennis and Graham Hess each scored once as well.

Hess threw the final inning for the Indians, allowing three runs on a hit, two walks and two K’s.

Cowanesque Valley (1-0) is scheduled to host Athens on Friday.
